Pros

Extremely talented staff from wide array of backgrounds who care deeply about doing good work and getting policy right. Collaborative, team-oriented work culture. Good work-life balance.

Cons

Staff are encouraged to chart their own course for development, but that's not always easy, and management could help more.

Pros

Good amount of PTO Good Pay (which at times is bad because you price out the competition) Nice selection of Tea and Coffee

Cons

Mis-management galore. Politics all over the place. Antiquated policies and processes. Don't have a good handle on staff development. Multiple bosses for one person. Project problems are brushed under the rug till very late. most of the work is put on the shoulders of a few staff members. Newly hired senior staff have no idea of the culture of the company. Management wants to hire people to address gaps in the knowledge but does not empower them to take appropriate actions. Senior management is too distanced from staff and does not understand project problems. New Project Directors have no idea how to to run a project. Supervisors harass people with asinine demands. Mr. Decker is great on the web conferences but has never taken a chance to meet and listen to the staff.

Mathematica Response

Thank you for your candid feedback. We are always working to make and keep Mathematica a great place to work for everyone we hire—and we are disappointed when staff don’t think we have met that mark. Mathematica is experiencing an exciting time of change. We have several strategic initiatives in place to address many of the challenges you point out – updating business processes and policies, formalizing a professional development plan for all staff, and implementing better project management tools. We hope that these initiatives empower our staff to live the change they want to see in the organization. Additionally, we’d like to highlight that every one of our projects goes through a thorough monthly review with senior management that includes the project director. These are opportunities to mentor project directors, give senior management direct knowledge of each project as well as a birds-eye view, and ensure that every client is getting the highest quality service and deliverables. As an active employee, we’d encourage you to attend the next Town Hall or staff lunch with Paul Decker. As CEO, he’s committed to providing open access to staff which is why he has at least one Town Hall per office each year, lunches that are open to all staff, and an open-door policy all year.

Lots of (exciting) change

Pros

Incredibly talented and committed colleagues, flexible work environment, strong benefits including lots of PTO, lots of access to senior management including lots of town halls with the CEO, and interesting work. Employee owned, so when the company does well I do too, and the company has done well consistently. Also like the very visible committment to diversity and inclusion.

Cons

Uncertainty as the research field changes. Hard to know how much your job will change and when, but it's also an interesting opportunity.
