Pros

Proven products with strong market position in residential real estate Growth opportunities in several new markets and application areas Strong VC and strategic partner backing Experienced management team Great corporate culture - inclusive, transparent, aspirational Brand new offices in Sunnyvale near NetApp and Yahoo

Cons

Lots of opportunities makes prioritization and focus somewhat challenging, but manageable Rapid growth means some internal systems haven't matured yet, but a work in progress

A job that I love

Pros

I would hear of people who loved their job. They enjoyed coming into work. It wasn't just some work for a paycheque. They loved it. I finally know what they're talking about. Matterport has a rather unique and healthy balance between business sensibilities and new tech goodness. It's not a hipster paradise, but we know what CI is and we're moving towards it. We build our own cameras in house. This is *awesome*, in my opinion. That said, we are primarily a software company. I work on the infrastructure side of things. We are moving towards an SRE model very sensibly. It's not something a manager read in a book and thought was a good idea. Most things are very grassroots from the staff on up. Stuff... doesn't break. Haven't been woken up in the middle of the night yet. Partly luck and partly minimal scope. We still do lots of cool things like auto scaling, Salt, automated builds, and automated testing (working on expanding that out). We are trying hard early on to get things right so we don't have an impossible task of shaking bad habits. This means focusing on not having numerous languages, tools, and communication mediums. In the long run, it should make everything easier and work more smoothly. We try new things. I've tinkered with running the TV metrics monitors off a Raspberry Pi. Wrote a couple open source things since working here. I work with legends. This is no joke. A number of them have Wikipedia pages or at least mentions. And if I'm not working with a legend, it's probably with someone brilliant. Not everyone is 100% brilliant, but the brilliance-per-capita is amazing. Management is excellent and very hands off. My best boss, by far, has been from Matterport. Company really takes care of us. The food is great (ranging from average to better than restaraunt quality), catered at lunch every day. There are events here and there that are just fantastic. If I get married anytime soon, I may try to have it at our next holiday party to save money without looking too cheap. Doesn't seem to be taken over by SJWs. We play foosball! I'm challenged. There was a point where I wasn't feeling challenged. Met with my tech lead and he asked me a bunch of questions and helped explain some things. Realized how much I really own my job and my part at the company. I have a lot of responsibility, which is good and bad. But for me, I'm here to learn, do work, and grow. I have that taken care of at Matterport. Culture is very honest. Sometimes too honest, but most seem to really care about the customer and their peers. I almost forgot to mention the product. You should check our the tours, they are awesome. It's impressive and useful. I think it even creates jobs outside of the company. I'm proud to show it off.

Cons

The tech stack isn't always sexy. It's not bad in many places, just not as bleeding edge as would sometimes be fun. For instance, we're not using Go, we're using Python. We're not using Rust, we're using C++. So it's cool, just not sexy. And generally what is used is used for a reason. The infrastructure could be a little more complicated. Working in infra, this is sort of fun to have more moving parts to juggle. But really, it's good. We try to make something that works and stays up. Matterport is not an infra sandbox, unlike some companies. That said, it would be fun to work on Google-scale problems (which we don't have), but there's so much else (both technical and not) to learn before then. There's at least one (insert word for not-so-nice person here) in the company. But the ratio is really, really low. Since it's so grassroots, it can be hard to tell what's going on. Many movements are started with one person and branch out from there. Sometimes there's conflict. In the end, I don't know if there's a better alternative. It's just not always easy and not always clear. You have to decide for yourself in the end. Office is too small. We have a new office on the way, and it'll also probably be too small. And some people like to turn on the lights and burn out my retinas. Oh well. There aren't enough potatoes served. Our current office is kind of ugly and soulless. New office should be better. Office connection should be faster. Lack of staffing around IT and other departments. Some people doing the multiple jobs. Not anyone's fault in particular, but should be fixed in time. It's good enough that I actually care about it. I finally feel emotionally vested and this difficult in many ways. It's no longer just a job. So it has more ups and downs, and the right people at the right time could screw it up. And when someone does something wrong, it bothers me more than it normally would. But when we win, I actually appreciate it.

Pros

Love it here! Fast moving, great culture.

Cons

Growing out of our office space so a bit packed in, no conference rooms -- should be fixed by early next year!
