The tech stack isn't always sexy. It's not bad in many places, just not as bleeding edge as would sometimes be fun. For instance, we're not using Go, we're using Python. We're not using Rust, we're using C++. So it's cool, just not sexy. And generally what is used is used for a reason.
The infrastructure could be a little more complicated. Working in infra, this is sort of fun to have more moving parts to juggle. But really, it's good. We try to make something that works and stays up. Matterport is not an infra sandbox, unlike some companies. That said, it would be fun to work on Google-scale problems (which we don't have), but there's so much else (both technical and not) to learn before then.
There's at least one (insert word for not-so-nice person here) in the company. But the ratio is really, really low.
Since it's so grassroots, it can be hard to tell what's going on. Many movements are started with one person and branch out from there. Sometimes there's conflict. In the end, I don't know if there's a better alternative. It's just not always easy and not always clear. You have to decide for yourself in the end.
Office is too small. We have a new office on the way, and it'll also probably be too small. And some people like to turn on the lights and burn out my retinas. Oh well.
There aren't enough potatoes served.
Our current office is kind of ugly and soulless. New office should be better. Office connection should be faster.
Lack of staffing around IT and other departments. Some people doing the multiple jobs. Not anyone's fault in particular, but should be fixed in time.
It's good enough that I actually care about it. I finally feel emotionally vested and this difficult in many ways. It's no longer just a job. So it has more ups and downs, and the right people at the right time could screw it up. And when someone does something wrong, it bothers me more than it normally would. But when we win, I actually appreciate it.
