Pros

There were several pros when I first started working here. The job was flexible, and my team and immediate management are phenomenal. The pay was not awful for starting out of school, and they promote quickly.

Cons

As time has gone on, they have greatly reduced the work from home. We are now limited to one day a week of their choosing (a rotation), when we previously have 8 days a month (almost 2 weekly) and 10 annual days. They have also began to monitor badging in and badging out of employees. When I first started working there it appeared they really cared about their employees, but as time has gone on I can see that it is untrue.

Thank you for the review. We have made recent changes to our remote work policy in support of our culture of in-office collaboration, while still providing opportunities for associates to work from home when personal flexibility is needed. With regard to our badge system, as with many large companies, Medpace uses an access control system for the safety and security of our associates, and we do require associates to use company issued identification while on campus. We also acknowledge that Medpace is not a fit for everyone, that every employee has different needs, and that it is unrealistic to think we can meet all of them. However, we always try our best to make every employee feel valued and satisfied in their position at the organization.

Pros

The people I work with are nice.

Cons

It’s a new year which means insurance went up and it’s a significant amount, especially if you’re covering more than just yourself. Also new for 2024 is a mandatory in office day on Tuesday - no exceptions for bad weather, sick child etc, and this isn’t just a decrease in flexibility we used to enjoy, it’s also a major inconvenience since their isn’t enough parking when everyone is in office, and soon employees will be forced to “hotel” since there aren’t enough desks. So great job treating employees like “family.” I’m sure we will all bond on “Together Tuesdays” as we complain about our insurance, parking and desks.

Thank you for the review. We have a designated team that regularly reviews our compensation and benefits to ensure we are being competitive within our industry. Benefits costs throughout the United States continue to increase, our designated teams attempt to find the lowest cost possible for our employees without sacrificing coverage. In regard to our new mandatory Together Tuesday, this is a day of the week to maximize collaboration and assure predictable interaction for all associates, including those who are completely office-based. Like many companies in the US, we feel that a gradual return to office can be beneficial – especially for new joiners! Unlike many companies Medpace has not reduced the number of work from days available to employee – we have only identified Tuesdays as the day of the week that all colleagues can expect to be together. We feel that combined with our flexible scheduling, PTO, sick time, and our work-from-home policy, that employees have a generous amount of flexibility in their work schedule to meet their needs. Any recommendations you have on improving our processes or communication can be sent to your Human Resources representative. We are always looking to address concerns and hear new ideas. We appreciate your feedback!

Pros

This is a great introductory position to learn statistical skills in the clinical trials industry at a rapid pace that you can then use to market yourself to pharmaceutical companies.

Cons

This company puts itself above all else, at the expense of its employees. I worked at Medpace for 2 years, starting shortly after the onset of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Position as a Statistical Analyst: There is limited training provided as a new grad in this department. We had about 2 weeks of training where we were given simple projects to complete, and then were thrown into massive projects with little direction or guidance. Projects are set up with primary programmers with quality control programmers checking your output, often led by a lead statistician who had little to no experience or training in project management and was stretched thin across half a dozen projects simultaneously. If you asked for help of any sort (including minor technical questions, like "What is the syntax for programming an unusual symbol?”) you were told that you must figure it out on your own. If the project falls into a tight deadline due to the ineptitude of the project lead, the fault and punishment would inevitably fall on the lowest level members of the team (the Statistical Analysts). Individuals are promoted too quickly within this department because of the incredibly high turnover rate - once employees gain a couple of years of experience, most leave for a company with better benefits and work/life balance. Because of this, there is a SEVERE lack of employees with the skills to be project leads - most employees are either fresh-faced Statistical Analyst I's, or managers who have been in the company for 6+ years. There are a handful of statisticians who serve as project leads and they are therefore stretched extremely thin. This is a severe weakness. This chaotic department structure makes it impossible to actually learn and grow at your own pace – newer employees get promoted before they are ready to handle the higher workload. This creates a high stress environment for the entire team when inexperienced employees are given massive projects. The result is 60+ hour work weeks when there is an impending delivery. On multiple occasions, I was told that I would be expected to work on weekends and during my time off/vacation. Culture of Department: The culture of the biometrics and biostatistics department at Medpace is incredibly toxic. It is extremely cliquey and there are not enough efforts to make new employees feel like they belong. I went almost a year before meeting my manager. Early after you join, management will make a decision about how much they like you based off no measurable method, and your entire career at Medpace will be dictated by this initial opinion. If you are a "favorite", you will receive higher merit increases, more frequent salary increases, be eligible for bonuses, and be eligible for promotion at a faster rate. If not, you will not receive as much of a merit increase, will not receive bonuses, and everything you do will be heavily scrutinized. If you have a target on your back, it won't be long before they find a reason to fire you. In theory, we had biannual performance reviews. In actuality, I never met with my supervisor to discuss my performance and he would submit the report twice a year based off of what he guessed was my project performance. COVID/Crisis Response: While most companies were fully remote until recently, Medpace had employees coming into office regularly starting in summer 2020, stating that the quarterly earnings in the two months prior indicated loss due to employees working from home. There was no need to require employees to be in person – in my first year there, I spoke to no people in office and only communicated with coworkers virtually. In the time that I was there, there were multiple COVID outbreaks in various departments of the company, with no response from the organization regarding employee welfare. There was once an outbreak on the biometrics floor - the company failed to shut down the floor to limit the spread of illness. Once I got COVID, I alerted the "response team", who instructed me TO TELL NO ONE and to use my limited sick time to cover the time I was out. They failed to alert any of my coworkers who had been in my vicinity. Not only was this completely preventable, but I was expected to use my own sick time for getting sick at the workplace I was forced to go to. When the crisis in Ukraine began, we received a pathetic email from management stating that employees who were based in Ukraine were allowed to work from home. That was it. From what I can tell, there were no other measures taken to ensure employees in the middle of a refugee crisis had the time off they needed to get out or get help. Company Culture: In the name of employee engagement, once a month they will bring in an ice cream truck or give out a beer to each employee. There is no community building otherwise. These half-hearted gimmicks are extremely superficial – rather than providing quality healthcare, decent benefits, and competitive salaries, you’ll get a beer every month! The needs and priorities of the employees are not a concern for Medpace. Most positions in this company can be done remotely for identical benefits packages – there is no incentive to work at this company. You do not qualify for any work from home time until working at the company for more than 6 months, and then you are allowed to WFH a couple days per week.

We are taken back by your thoughts on the organization. We firmly disagree with your accusation we do not care about our employees. Our associates are the heartbeat of this company, and we strive to make them feel heard and valued. We promote a culture focused on positivity, collaboration, and flexibility. We also disagree with your accusations regarding our culture. We show our admiration for our associates on multiple levels such as through our employee focused policies emphasizing flexibility, competitive compensation and benefits with financial growth potential, career advancement and training opportunities, modern facilities, social events/activities, along with other perks (partnerships with local vendors, employee discounts, etc.). We are constantly reviewing our compensation and benefits with leadership to ensure we are competitive. We are very proud of our hybrid work-from-home structure that is available for most employees. Additionally, we provide generous PTO and flex time to ensure we create a flexible environment for a workforce with diverse needs. We hold evaluations twice per year and offer the opportunity for merit and bonus annually. Bonus and merit increases are based upon minimum eligibility requirements as well as performance standards. We are experiencing a major growth period and it is true that we demand a great deal from our associates. We are working hard to bring in top talent to help alleviate workload pressures. Employees with workload concerns are encouraged to discuss the issue with their supervisor or come to Human Resources if the issue continues. Employee safety is something we take very seriously. Like most companies, navigating the onset of the COIVD-19 pandemic was new territory. We had put in place several safety and flexibility measures in line with the guidance from the CDC. For example, we had staggard work from home schedules, extra cleaning services, and accommodated employees as necessary. We also had a COVID response team who would do the contact tracing and informed those impacted. We recognize we cannot please everyone, and we do our best to provide an environment where our employees feel challenged, motivated, and valued. It is apparent Medpace was not the best fit for you, but we wish you well in your future endeavors.
