Rewards long service rather than talent/innovation especially in field offices

Pros

Some exciting projects to get involved with. Decent support package for field-level staff.

Cons

Field offices are hugely bureaucratic. HR and Operations systems are about 20 years out of date which makes it immensely challenging to effectively deliver programs. Ironic for an organisation that purports to respond effectively to crises! The truth is its systems are simply not up to the task. There are huge gaps in County office leadership - people are rewarded for loyalty/long service, meaning there is little appetite for innovation and reform. Quite heavily centralised and Portland staff are divorced from the realities on the ground, yet dominate research/reports/project design/decision making.

Sometimes there may be a lack of communication Top to Bottom, making it hard to understand the Company's mission.

Average but not exceptional

Pros

Some great programs and individuals working for the organization. Some of Mercy Corps' programs really are making a difference to people living in some of the toughest locations across the world.

Cons

Like many organizations, senior management is full of nepotism and rewards those who toe the party line. People who point out some of the obvious organizational challenges are quickly kicked to the curb.
