A waste of talent and resources

Pros

Overall nice and sharp people, fully stocked kitchen and free lunches, pleasant office, good work/life balance.

Cons

Top management doesn't seem to be able to make strategic decisions and stick to them for more than a couple months. Which means that the entire company's focus moves back and forth, with no clear north star. They solely rely on the product (and not marketing) to grow the business, which is unrealistic. That's too bad because the pay-per-mile insurance model is interesting and could be groundbreaking with proper directions and investment.

Pros

Casual dress. Always feeding everyone.

Cons

They lure you in with snacks, happy hour Fridays, Nerf gun wars and a “laid back environment”. They promise to listen to feedback, but never ask for it. Those who’ve given it seem to have a target on their back. They can’t keep employees around to save a life. In 4 months about half the department has left. As a new adjuster, you will “inherit” someone else’s claims as soon as you get out of training. 30-50 claims on day one. They promise 6 weeks of awesome training, but it ends up being 2 weeks. If you’re an experienced adjuster, they use and abuse you, while the trainees are babied. Everyone is super stressed out and physically ill all the time. More than half the managers were promoted within, after 6 months to a year. They have the management and personal skills of 15 year olds. Expect to work 50-70 hours a week (paid salary, so no overtime) and it still not be enough. The managers barely talk to you and only focus on their perfect ones. You’ll start out with a crappy shift too. Worst, most unprofessional environment I’ve ever worked in. You’ll regret it, so keep looking. There are about 20 adjusters and no one has been there more than a few months because attrition is so bad.

Thanks for sharing your candid feedback; we’re disappointed it wasn’t a good fit. We take feedback like this seriously and will share it with our team, particularly as we evaluate our training and onboarding programs. Good luck with your next role.

Pros

The culture of Metromile is smart and humble, including very down to earth C-level. Team members enjoy being at work and working with each other. There's a sense of ownership in the company, and everyone is very dedicated to making Metromile successful. Money is spent responsibly and not too frugally. Anything you need to be successful within reason is encouraged. Leadership has vision and philosophy for success. Leadership insists in having good work-life balance and it's reflected by the environment. The Metromile product right now is car insurance, but there's a vision on expanding the idea of the car experience in new ways, which will be exciting. There is also massive growth potential as the product expands into new states. Niceties include highly competitive salary with typical stock options based on level, free Kaiser HMO (vision $2/month and dental $10/month), free One Medical with PPO option, corporate discounts through third-party, subsidized commuter ($125/month) with additional tax free, $50/month wellness, free Eat Club MWF with a pizza/wings/beer happy hour on Fridays, frequent celebration, team offsites, curated snacks, non-alcoholic drinks and beer, and many random treats from team members.

Cons

While it's a mature startup, there is room to better structure processes, and to optimize what each department does. Because everyone is focused on making Metromile successful, they may not always focus the right problems in the right areas at the right time. Recent new leaders and new positions show that Metromile recognizes to continue to grow and scale, they need strong talent. There's a lot of work to get to a point where everything is more cohesive. Could have free vision and dental, and lunch on TTh.
