1. As a response to Pro #1, . Michael's uses the codeword "Flexible Work Scheduling" to disguise their stinginess towards its non-management hourly employees. The use the "time off" thing as a way to promote their view of a "work/life balance".
The problem with Michael's is that they offer TOO MUCH unpaid time off--to the point that you'll spend most of your "free time" broke and looking for another job. I give them a 5-star for Work/Life Balance because they'll give you plenty of time to decide whether coming into work is worth it or not.
2. The boss is so quick to run an employee off the clock it's pitiful. I also got cut a whole day because everyone did a good job with the truck. That was my "reward" for doing a good job--a day lost with no pay! Some reward that is. Again, they like to give away unpaid time off like candy. (I definitely give them a 1-star rating for culture and values--seems like they only value money)
3. Politics, friendships, and favoritism rules when it comes to getting paid. You have to be the boss's favorite in order to get at least a minimum of 15 hours. Otherwise you'll be reduced down to 4-12 hour workweeks. Most of the time you'll be just a fill-in person to do some cleanup work, work the truck, or do some other menial task that some manager or favored employee did not have to do. Some weeks are reduced down to 4 hours for one day.
4. Immediate supervisor can be a micromanaging poindexter at times. Sometimes the boss may not even let you finish an assignment by telling you to go home early.
Bottom line: Michael's is company that is for it's management and corporate staff--not its hourly associates. This is absolutely the worst company to start out at the bottom at, as you'll stay there forever (hours capped at 4 - 15 a week part-time).
