-technology is never working. When the internet is down all of the self checkouts are down too. Constant issues with sales, coupons and vouchers not working correctly. Registers and self checkouts are always having issues and IT is very slow to help. The self checkouts can't do half of the things that the legacy registers can do but cashiers have to direct the majority of customers to the self checkouts. Returns, specifically online returns are rarely processed correctly and management has to override the transactions. All of the apps have lots of issues but by far the most annoying is the self checkout application CONSTANTLY logs you out. The old pin pads that worked fine were replaced by worse pin pads that make the registers go much slower. The list goes on and on and on. It is rare to have a shift without many technical issues.
-Customers hate the self checkouts and the cashiers are blamed by both the customers and management. Cashiers are always being yelled at by customers and corporate tells us new procedures to follow on the front end to try to prevent customers from being angry that don't work and cashiers are punished for them not working. Calling the self checkouts kiosks or assisted checkouts, scanning their items on the self checkouts for them and having to verbally walk every customer through how to use the self checks is frustrating and annoying to customers and cashiers. Just let us ring people up on the legacy registers when they say they want to be rung up!
-Rewards, credit cards and Extend numbers are super important to management and you will be lectured over metrics even if your numbers are great.
-low pay. Minimum wage with a 25 cent raise after a year, but thats pretty standard for retail.
-Bad management. Obviously not in every store but in mine the managers are always butting heads with each other, refuse to help cashiers or work on register, and blame cashiers for poor store metrics. Almost all of my managers spent portions of their shift in the breakroom and the office just talking to each other or literally watching ticktock. I was expected to train my new manager who spends so much of his time in the breakroom, standing up front and not helping and walking around talking to his co-workers. I've trained many people on register and it took him three shifts instead of the usual one to train up front because he kept giving me arbritary tasks ( I had to vacum a shelf, and re-arrange the entire front end only for a manager who actually knows what she's doing to put it back to the corporate standard) He gives multiple lectures a day to cashiers about the credit cards despite never getting any applications himself. He's overall extremely difficult to work with and is completely unchecked by the higher up managers.
It seems like the senior management is unhelpful and gives them poor direction, hardly any hours and unrealistic metric goals.
