Pros

Decent pay and what some might call good "experience" for some entry level roles. Interesting ideas for new products (though poorly executed, I'll get to that in a minute)

Cons

I wanted to give more stars for the extremely talented middle managers and co workers who bring incredible experience and ideas to the table. In the right environment they would be successful, but the upper management at the highest level really has no idea how to nurture innovation with processes that make sense in today's technology industry. How can the company compete when the CEO has bi-weekly or weekly reviews that create panic and sap every resource to satisfy his needs, which are not the market's needs? The best people cannot succeed in this environment. The current climate is kind of like the pre-Baratheon Realm in GoT. The CEO is the Mad King - if someone truly challenges him and the way he runs the company, he disposes of them. The people that remain around him are yes men who are afraid to do things the right way for the very real threat of getting ousted. Unless one of the new product lines succeeds despite the CEO hampering true innovative and productive work and draining morale, his reign will crumble like the Targaryen's did, and the Baratheons and Starks of the market (Tableau, Qlik, etc.) will take over. Also this analogy makes MSTR seem better than it is - it never really was king of the BI market. And never will be as long as Saylor is there.

Pros

CEO's tweets are often entertaining

Cons

The CEO/Chairman/majority shareholder uses this public company as his personal playground. For the 2nd half of 2020, he has been attempting to manipulate the markets for both Bitcoin and his company's stock. Just look at his tweets and the number of interviews and podcasts he's done since he invested all the company's cash into Bitcoin. Now he has the company do a public debt offering so he can borrow money to make an even bigger Bitcoin investment. This raises many questions: Is this company a tech company or an investment company? How much does the company put into software development vs Bitcoin investment? How is the Board allowing this to happen? Maybe it has something to do with them basing their decisions off of YouTube videos. Is the MicroStrategy website supposed to be promoting a product or Bitcoin? Are CEO's allowed to make outrageous and factually untrue statements about something that has a direct effect on that company's stock price? Even if you make yourself comfortable with all of that, you face one of the most demanding work environments you'll ever work in. Unreasonable and completely arbitrary deadlines. Absolutely no consideration for employees' personal lives or any form of work life balance. Passive aggressive micromanagement from the top. Centralized decision making by two individuals - nobody has the ability or nerve to question them, and employee's work blindly and exhaustively on pet projects that never get off the ground.

Pros

Smart co-workers who are fun to hang out with when you can.

Cons

I had no idea that it was possible to micromanage people as vehemently as managers do at MicroStrategy. MicroStrategy has the most inefficient reporting structure imaginable. All decisions are made by the CEO or President. Everyone else in the company (including the CXOs) runs around like chickens with their heads cut off trying to anticipate what is in the CEO’s mind. Everyone’s anxiety level is at an 11 at all times. The senior leaders take their stress out on those below them and unscrupulously throw their subordinates under the bus to save their own behinds. I have sat in meeting after meeting watching VPs and CXOs blame others for their mistakes to save their own jobs and then later lie to their subordinates about it. It is disgusting, but everyone knows it happens all the time and have just accepted it is part of the job. As a result, 90% of your job is writing CYA documentation. But it is really useless to do so. If something goes wrong in the CEOs’ eyes (whether it is a mistake or not) , the executive team will find a scapegoat—they always do no matter how much you document things. People don’t care about each other here. Everyone is miserable. Everyone! Those who don’t admit their misery are phonies and liars. Don’t trust them. They are the ones talking bad about you to executives behind your back to try to make themselves look better. If you take a job here, it must be because you are desperate. Word to the wise -- if you start working here, take the paycheck but don’t stop your job search.

MicroStrategy Response
5y
We appreciate everyone’s view point. Like many companies during COVID-19, MicroStrategy has been conducting an interval review of how we work and support our employees. As a result, we have recently announced a new flexible work policy that will allow employees to work from home four days of the week when we more broadly and safely open our office locations in 2021. In addition, we are providing an annual stipend to cover some of the costs employees acquire while working from home. This new flexible work environment is providing us the opportunity to reinvent the experience of working at MicroStrategy and continue to encourage creativity, agility and empowering our employees. Our executive leaders support these changes and trust employees to do their work whenever and wherever it allows them to be most productive and support their work/life balance. While this culture shift will take time, training and adjustments along the way, we are excited about this change. Employees have already shared positive feedback from a recent survey and have been happy with the direction of the business and the support MicroStrategy has provided during this time.
