Pros

NIC has the potential to be a fantastic employer. They have relatively diverse hiring practices considering the sector and location - veterans, minorities, immigrants, you name it. The compensation is decent, the breakroom is stocked with a bunch of snackfood, the people are for the most part nice, the office building itself is fairly modern and a pleasant enough place to work. Also, unless you're mean-spirited or go out of your way to anger the wrong person, it seems like no amount of incompetence can get you fired.

Cons

This company diverts government money away from creating numerous secure, good-paying public sector tech jobs to creating much fewer, much more tenuous "at-will" employees - the majority of whom are forced to work far more hours than anyone would consider reasonable regardless of compensation. All to enrich a few executives and shareholders.

Losing Its Appeal

Pros

Average pay for the area (so not bad - although not good either) Very good benefits i.e. healthcare and 401k matching. The No1 reason to remain with the company. Slightly flexible working hours at some locations.

Cons

Leadership can be totally disconnected from reality. The CEO tries to connect with the workers but fails to appreciate the many issues with those in the layers between himself and non-management workers. Average pay for the area - it really could be better. Benefits only help so much. A huge reluctance to allow much if any telecommuting work. A total lack of relevant training and investment in continued education. The system in place is literally unusable. A company that seems happy to change pay reviews on a whim costing employees many hundreds of dollars. A drop in the ocean for a company that can afford 50c per share bonus dividends. A big hit for many employees though. No defined (or even possible) career path for most positions without moving out of state. A very weird and hugely unfair yearly bonus system. Yearly bonus are a great idea but need to be a little more transparent. An 'openness' policy that simply doesn't work. It's great to have so many levels of people you can approach with an issue. Not so great when any problems are ignored or you're simply dismissed as irrelevant. A company 'culture' that is steadily becoming more archaic as opposed to embracing change and new, effective work methodology. A huge disconnect between head office and the individual portals.

Pros

They seem to have a strong business model and their technology always felt quite strong. I really enjoyed working on their products and am proud of the work we did. I genuinely believe we produced high quality work above the standards requested by our clients in WI state government. Our software reliably shipped updates on a regular cadence with a high level of stability, meaning we could operate in a much more agile framework than other places I have worked.

Cons

Mid-level management treats BAs as disposable. The team I worked on churned through 6 or 7 in two years. My manager consistently stacked my workload until I had too much to do, and then seemed offended if I suggested it was too much. Meanwhile, developers would play video games in the break room. The manager typically gave vague assignments to BAs, but expected us to intuit exactly what the manager requested and we were criticized if we asked too many questions. The lead developer on the team was consistently rude to the BAs and intermittently yelled at them and sometimes even the client, but BA's were blamed for any friction in the team. We were not allowed to make any decisions without running it by the lead developer, even if the developer arrived hours late. And the developer was frequently rude as we asked questions and criticized us for asking to many.
