Pros

NIC offers excellent benefits. Corporate promotes a work, family and life balance. In general everyone is nice at this company.

Cons

There is minimal respect for the technology teams. The technology teams are the reason why the company is lucrative. More praise and credit should be given to the technology teams. The DOT and DOO / DOM should be peers. Most DOOs do not have PMI experience. You can not effectively lead a PMO without PMI experience. NIC, especially the Portals have immature leadership teams. The company places inadequate, inappropriate, and under-qualified individuals in managerial roles. These managers who lack leadership abilities are always first to take the credit and first to reprimand and throw their team members under the bus. Management should not be approach through force, but rather through influence. Every two years HR should conduct a salary survey to ensure NIC and the Portals are paying fair market value to their employees.

Pros

Great benefits, get to work with new and emerging technologies, remote work is allowed.

Cons

No real possibilty of advancement, pay is below market value, if you're not "part of the club" with management you might as well find another job.

Pros

The work isn't particularly challenging, so some might see that as a positive. I wasn't expected to work lots of over time.

Cons

At the office I worked at, I made about 60 cents on the dollar as my peers in the industry, with my experience, make doing the same job. From my understanding, it's pretty common in NIC to make 40 to 20 percent less salary. As I see it, the company's "self-funded model" works because the workers subsidize it with lower salaries. I think that if you're in management, you might do better, but upward mobility is tricky at NIC because to move up you have to move to another state capital and most state capitals are not placing most people want to live. Because the salaries are so low, the company doesn't attract the best and the brightest therefore the quality of their work is not always up to par. So the work is by nature of being government work is often unchallenging, but because of the poor quality of people in the company, the quality suffers as well.
