It's Not The Same Company It Used To Be

Pros

The benefits are very good. I believe that the CEO really means it when he says he wants the best he can do for the employees. It's a tough place to be when you have to answer to the stock holders as well as the customers, employees, etc. And as companies grow, they must change.

Cons

I worked there for quite a long time. I can really only speak for one portal, but my view is that NIC and the portals do not promote the right people. The people who do the real work and have the "team" mentality rarely get promoted. I'm sure many in leadership do a great job, but too much emphasis on promotion is "talking the talk" and "looking the look". That "Marketing" mentality doesn't get applications written and it doesn't meet the needs of the customers. It concerns itself with looking good, winning awards, (and I suspect bonuses). And I hate to say it, but those sort of people tend to be "me" people. Since those in leadership often haven't done the "real work", they just don't understand the importance of putting resources into building infrastructure (upgrading applications for example) because those things aren't pretty and shiny. Pet projects that get attention demand the resources. The other truly necessary things are supposed to some how "still get done".

Turnover is high and technical skill is lacking with management

Pros

Small company environment with big company benefits including the great health care and the 401k program is pretty good. You have the ability to work at different portals and learn on the job. Promotes from within and top notch talent can quickly rise in the organization.

Cons

Business model needs to be refreshed. Portal customers do not seem to understand the value that the business model brings to the State Government. Executive management promotes managers in portals that do not have solid management skills including basic skill required for budgeting, planning and project management. The "next in line" philosophy does not work. In many cases the portal management lacks even the basic technical skills. This is pretty bad when you promote yourself as a tech company. Turn over is high at corporate and at our local portal. Our manager does not understand technology and definitely does not trust employees so the manager micro-manages to the point that employee turnover is well over 50% in that last 3 years. I have seen many people leave because of this manager.

Pros

Benefits and good benefits at that are paid for you and spouse in full. Vacation time is a lot and would be great if you could use it for that

Cons

Too much work given with little to no help and management doesn’t want to hear your opinion or views. No matter how much you try to advance unless your a chosen worker you’ll go nowhere.
