Was my home away from home

Pros

Used to be a wonderful place to work. Was there for a couple decades. Loyal staff who are friendly, caring and dedicated to what the mission was supposed to be "patients first".

Cons

Things changed dramatically about 5 years ago. Loyal and long term staff have been laid off...not a few, many. Cheaper to higher new grads. The CEO came in years ago as a bright light, filled with energy and dedication to the community..that has taken a back seat. If you want to work for a true non profit/community based hospital, this is no longer that place. If you want to work for a "for profit" model and are new to healthcare, this would be your place to start.

Pros

Used to be an excellent company until the new H.R. took over.

Cons

Super political. It doesn't matter how long or how hard you work if you're not management's favorite you will get nowhere. Raises are a joke, PTO system too. H.R. won't do much except waste your time

MUST RAISE RN WAGES!!!

Business Outlook

Pros

CNO wants to make changes. PIH making attempts at new equipment and remodeling.

Cons

PIH Downey must raise the RN WAGES or we will continue to bleed out! ED has almost 50% travelers and can't seem to hire experienced staff or nurses that will stay. New RNs in ED not dedicated to nursing, team, their job or the hospital; are leaving for higher wages. Now PIH is allowing contracted doctors group in ED to dictate how department is run. Blaming staff for long wait times, when actually triage nurse can take less than 7 mins and then patient has to wait for mid-level providers to finish, then see and discharge. Simple sore throat can take 2-3 hours in the ED- too long. Radiology reading really slow-another delay. Admitting doctor and residents not calling back or delay of admission order-more delays. This has nothing to do with nursing, this is doctors and PIH doing nothing about doctor delays. PIH can't hire more nurses or keep them because they won't pay higher wages and keep raising cost of benefits or getting less. Never see COO of Downey, never makes rounds and staff have no idea what she looks like. Too many admin positions and not enough staff.
