Pros

Freedom to propose your own stories and make your own hours Decent pay for the work Great resume builder Great way to get to know a town and make contacts Good way to put your writing on display

Cons

Payments were not on a consistent enough basis for a company that size No place to advance to other than editor This job doesn't really exist anymore due to "Mommy Bloggers"

Pros

You'll get tons of writing samples, meet many interesting people, develop your journalistic and promotional skills quite a bit, and it looks good on a resume (or grad school application). Plus, it can be a lot of fun!

Cons

They expect a ton of work, expectations shift very frequently and quite dramatically, the administration is confusing, and they tend to excuse any mistakes they make by claiming they're a "startup" (which doesn't really hold water once a major corporation buys you). Also, many editors are forced to work weekends (basically 24/7) and taking time off can be a real hassle, but if you're insistent you really can take weekends, holidays and vacation off. Finally, there's very little (almost no) room for promotion.

Pros

An incredibly flexible work environment, including the ability to work from home and largely set your own schedule. Salary and workload were decent while I was there, and the ability to operate your team with some autonomy.

Cons

Lack of strong managers in leadership roles, almost no ability to set or control expectations, and inconsistent HR procedures and actions make it a difficult job for the long-term. As the company is still evolving, changes in your job description and responsibilities change frequently, and corporate leaders are terrible at providing advance notice and giving you the guidance and training to manage all the zigs and zags.
