Pros

Lots of opportunities for overtime

Cons

Penn-Mar Human Services Maryland Day Program is where I currently work. There is little direction and lots of confusion on a daily. You can easily get 3 very different even contradictory responses from the Day Program Managers who are under trained and lack the simple capabilities to remove their personal feeljngs/situations from the professional setting. Penn-Mar Day program is currently out of compliance per DDA guidelines. In fact they have not been in compliance since I began working here. I would not recommend working here, the managers are unprofessional and feel as though they don't even have to acknowledge the DSP's. Often when help is requested or required mangers ignore the needs of staff leaving staff feeling unsupported. If you are someone who has a passion for working with adults with disabilities please take your passion to an organization that will truly value you. Penn-Mar over works and burns people out. The turn over rate is extremely high and the day program is always short staffed. When concerns are brought to upper management nothing is done accept once making upper management aware the staff members are then targeted. Don't work here it was the worst professional decision I could have ever made.

Pros

Working with the individuals is obviously going to be both challenging and rewarding. Great training structure.

Cons

PA Day Program. Managers don't know how to be good leaders. Fear-based culture with no meaningful incentives and very low pay. Constant focus on what employees are doing wrong, ignore what they do right. The same 1 or 2 people constantly win awards for playing office politics games and making themselves look good, while others do all the work. Contradictory, arbitrary rulings from managers. They play favorites a lot. Everything is politics based. New ideas are met with blank stares and silence- no support. No wonder they have high turnover rates, anyone who cares enough to want to make things better will feel their soul being drained every day.
