Pros

surrounded by smart people that are excited about their work. pay is a lot better than academia. support staff are incredible--IT gets stuff done immediately. if you want to write a proposal, you're given full support. work/life balance is better than anywhere i've ever been, people saunter in at 9 or so and vanish at 5. this is not a grind factory at all. they do really cool stuff and expect that i will, also.

Pros

Great place to get your feet wet on many different projects A lot of responsibility is afforded to you early on

Cons

Most projects and work you do doesn't seem to make a difference. 80% of projects die between funding phases or don't get commercialized. Its extremely frustrating to see months or years of work end in a report and a moth balled prototype. The way to advance in the company is to write proposals. Be prepared to work extensive unpaid overtime to complete them Modest compensation. The more you're paid the more your time charges a project budget The nature of SBIR contracts limits how much time you can work on a project you enjoy Dealing with set billable hours on projects is frustrating and doesn't always produce the best result
