Pros

-- Very quick growth (* at the cost of industry/market standard pay) -- Great coworkers (* whose names and faces will largely change by the end of each year) -- Open-door policies held by even higher-tier leadership (* who may promptly dismiss any concerns) -- Countless internal opportunities (* that you won’t necessarily be allowed to pursue)

Cons

PowerSchool’s culture looks great on paper, but that’s where it ends. The greatest issues seem endemic to the company itself, and internally, you’ll hear of the same problems your team faces day to day being encountered in each and every department, with no resolution being found anywhere. But hey, at least it’s not just you! Many of the problems encountered by teams center around the sheer amount of work to be done, and leadership’s seeming unwillingness or inability to mitigate. Many employees, hourly and salaried alike, feel the need to regularly work outside of normal hours to keep up. They’re presented with an ever-increasing workload, far more than could be handled by even the most senior of employees, and may be subject to criticism when they’re not consistently able to complete 10 hours of work in an 8 hour day. This has, in turn, had the unfortunate effect of a poor work-life balance being treated as a badge of honor amongst teams, and it’s not uncommon for employees to openly “brag” about how many hours they had to put in the evening before. New employees are led to see this as the norm and feel pressured to do the same in order to grow. I cannot stress enough how incredibly unhealthy this is, both for the culture of the company itself and for each person whose life is being slowly drained away as a result. And sure, you can take time off to help account for the extra hours put in, as DTO is not technically hard-capped, but you will be guilted and scrutinized for each and every request you submit for time-off after meeting an undisclosed threshold. Your total days off will also be compared to every member on your team, so you’d better hope your manager’s favorites take long vacations again this year, or taking off for your aunt’s funeral is really going to be a hard squeeze. Your individual productivity will have no bearing on this. The most unfortunate and by far the most damaging thing about PowerSchool, though, is that you’ll always be waiting for the other shoe to drop. Even though you’ll tell yourself it can’t get any worse than this, you’ll know that it can, and you’ll spend every day waiting for the next big thing to happen, as taxing as that is.

Pros

The immediate teammates and leads are very nice and helpful, and it feels like we're contributing to the K12 space and helping the education system. Also the pay isn't horrible, it's comparable with some jobs in the area.

Cons

In the last 5 years, it's gone from 100% US / CAN based dev and QA engineers to maybe 20% US / CAN and 80% India (just guessing, it's never publicized). It's not a problem outsourcing extra talent if we're growing, but that's not the case here. This is random firings of employees that have been with the company 5 - 15+ years just to meet the quota of budget cuts, and then filling the positions with offshore. For instance, 4 - 5 months ago they fired 30 - 40 from R&D, and last year filled close to that many positions offshore. Basically being phased out. Essentially this creates a culture of everyone rating projects with story-points (to track how much we're contributing) higher than the actual effort so management doesn't target them, and at the same time people are less helpful with others because they're scrambling to not be fired. It's toxic. There are layoffs 2 or 3 times a year. If you get a job here from the states / Canada, view it as a temp position as a stop gap until you find someplace that actually cares.

Not very stable, CEO & HR lied about KC office

Pros

Great customers, smart co-workers doing the daily front line operations tasks. Occasional free lunch. Good 401k matching plan. Nice annual bonus structure. Good if you live in India because the Indian Executive Officers love shipping jobs back home.

Cons

CEO, HR, and Upper Management are liars and snakes telling us that the KC office is vital to the company only to layoff over half the staff. Oh and yes there is a PowerSchool way even if you in Upper Management don't want to believe it but sadly the PowerSchool way is often inefficient and worse for everyone involved. The office in KC still says PeopleAdmin because the company is too cheap to have the sign removed or they don't care about the KC office and the people here. Perhaps a little of both.

PowerSchool Group Response

We appreciate this feedback! On an ongoing basis we review the needs of our business, including evaluating the distribution of our employees. To better serve our customers and support our growth, we are scaling down two of our smaller offices, where employees will have the option to work from home or at one of our other sites. For those where this is not possible, we have provided long term notice of the transition period. We respect our employees and provided this communication as early as possible to allow all impacted employees and their families to plan accordingly. PowerSchool continues to grow, and we are currently hiring across many locations.
