Perks but Beware

Pros

Great salary, great in-office perks, very nice colleagues

Cons

To all possible applicants - Please read - Be Aware. You will be dazzled by an outstanding salary, great benefits and in-office perks, availability to occasionally wfh. And lots of very nice colleagues. But hiding underneath all the good news is the RCA exam. Relativity has chosen to place a very high value on the successful completion of this exam. It's highly stressful. To software engineers and to folks with analytic skills, this may or may not be hard. To those who were valued by the hiring manager to offer a position that doesn't fit those categories, you will have a very difficult time memorizing what you need to know.

Thank you for your thoughtful feedback. The RCA exam is required for certain positions where it is essential that the employee have a strong understanding of our core offering. Because of that, it is meant to be challenging to capture a solid understanding of the platform and to represent the standard of excellence that our product promises to all our customers. While we do have a high pass rating for the exam, we are striving to make the pass rate even higher and encourage employees to share with us the resources they feel would be most helpful when studying for the exam to improve the experience and their success rate. --Dorie Blesoff, Chief People Officer

Moving in the right direction, but doing it too slowly

Pros

- Work-Life balance. I'm never expected to work more than 40 hours a week, I can take PTO pretty much whenever I want, and most managers are ok with you working from home now and then. - We have the market cornered. Relativity is complex and people are so used to using it that it would be tough for them to switch. - We've been around for 15 years + the processes we have in place will prevent us from screwing up really badly. We'll likely be around for 15 more years. - Great architectural leadership. The architecture team at Relativity really knows what they're doing - Friendly people. People hang out after work often, there are company sponsored happy hours/clubs/sports leagues/etc. The company supports people using the office for self-organized events after work. - Moves within the company are easy. If you like pretty much anything but front-end you can find an engineering team that does just about anything you might want to do, as we have a huge amount of engineering teams. If you like front-end, you've only got a few options (but that's not to say that they're bad ones) - Good outlook for the future: Our new CEO + Leadership team that Andrew (Our past CEO and executive chairman) has built out really seem to know what they're doing, and I foresee positive changes in the future

Cons

- Too much process causes us to move too slowly. Though our engineers/architects have great ideas, we tend to focus on feature development until architecture problems slap us in the face. As for engineering's suggestions, management tends to sit around over-analyzing them instead of trusting engineers' advice and fixing architecture problems as soon as they come up - Employees are paid less than market salary. Management depends on the company culture to make people stay (and it works... to an extent) - Management is reluctant to give promotions. Though the criteria for promotions are spelled out, they are deliberately as vague as possible, which allows managers to pick and choose their criteria. This usually ends up with people being promoted based on time in a role, not actual merit. - On-call is annoying. Engineers are expected to be on-call 24/7 for a week once every month or so.

Thank you for sharing your experience and feedback on these matters. It’s certainly disheartening to hear that you did not feel valued in the workplace as that goes against Relativity’s Core Values and vision as an employer. We are continuing to prioritize development of our leaders, reduction of bias and making sure we have a consistently inclusive environment throughout our company, especially between managers and their teams. To the extent we are aware of non-inclusive habits occurring, we are committed to changing that. While there isn’t an overnight fix, we are working tirelessly to implement more inclusive programming. As for lacking diversity in senior management, that is philosophically and literally the opposite of our vision and our direction. Our goal is for all Relativians to feel included and valued, and that they receive credit and rewards for their own impressive contributions. This year and in the future, we will continue to invest in Community Resource Groups, I&D meet-ups, and hiring from diverse pools of top talent – particularly at the management level.
