Pros

While many of the reviews left by former employees sound a bit whiny, there are some truths to their statements. However, not everything was bad at SOLUTE. Being a software engineer wasn't that bad depending on the PM that you were assigned to. There have been many changes to the PM staff but I think the iteration that was there when I left was pretty solid. If you worked hard and put yourself out there, opportunities to work on great contracts would pop up. There were some snacks available. They weren't the greatest, but they were there. I was just happy with having coffee every morning. Taking management out of the equation, there were some solid people who work/ed at SOLUTE that made my time there bareable.

Cons

There are many cons that I think should be worked on or are being worked on: -Lack of communication: There is a lot of miscommunication and lack of communication that goes on at SOLUTE. The CEO mentioned in a comment that they won 4 contracts in 4 weeks, but that information is never sent out to the employees. We would constantly be in the dark about how things are actually going. -Admin wing: This includes BD, Contracts, IT, and Accounting. Notice that I did not add HR.. that is because it doesn't exist at the point when I left. There is nothing wrong with the people in these departments, it is more that watching the way that they were treated made me glad that I was not in their shoes. There are reasons that so many left that department in the fashion that they did -Lack of Training: There is a serious lack of training available or documentation for that matter. Invest in sending your employees to workshops or conferences. -Lack of Sick Leave: Regardless of what the CEO said in his comments, unless you are management or a senior, we are offered 2 weeks of PTO and ZERO sick leave. That isn't competitive at all. That legit is the minimum. And depending on the manager, you might not have the option to work from home. I had surgery after starting and hadn't earned enough PTO to take a day off. I had asked to work from home and was denied. I had to come in after my surgery and couldn't take medication for the pain because I wouldn't have been able to drive.

We have made quite a few structural changes in the last year. The company is directly competing against Fortune 500 level businesses. We simply had to get better across the board. We have changed how we approach our work, and are implementing accountability top to bottom. I am fully aware that the folks that had it real easy did not like the changes, negative reactions by these folks were anticipated and expected. So, the usual griping on glass door was inevitable. The company does not expect much more than a person doing a competent job for 8 hours a day. We don't expect people to work nights or weekends. We just need people that want to accomplish work. The changes implemented over the last year have had a positive impact on the quality of our work and the quality of folks working at the company. I truly hope people that do not like the changes to find something that fit them better. As a business, we really have to concentrate on the people that want to move forward with the company. Thanks, John

Great Coworkers, Horrible Management

Pros

Worked with really smart people who are good at what they do Ability to work 'on site' and network with people who can help you find a great job They'll pay for your clearance

Cons

The management at the company is terrible, specifically in Advanced Concepts, and up to C-level including CEO, CTO, etc... The CEO makes a lot of employment decisions he shouldn't - he'll fire you if he sees something he doesn't like, no matter how small it is. He's gotten into yelling matches with people who disagree with him. He's also only in the office for 1 or 2 weeks out of the month, which is another reason management is bad, no supervision of management.

Well, we do, indeed, have a quality workforce. SOLUTE has a great reputation and we are growing fast. We would not stay in business if we did not take care of our clients and our employees. As CEO, I don't really make individual hiring decisions. Sometimes things don't work out, probably best that this person just moved on. The rest of our great employees will stay and continue to thrive. Regards, John Lyons, CEO, SOLUTE

Pros

* You can do whatever you want on their network. No protection whatsoever. You'll have full admin rights. * If you are a remote worker and necer ever have to deal with the C levels it might be okay for a paycheck.

Cons

* Ethically bankrupt -- Make no mistake this company does whatever it takes to make a buck. That includes questionable business practices in contract submittals, firing employees the CEO thinks might question those practices, baiting potential hires with flasely high salaries, lying to customers, pretending to have talent they do not, you get the idea.... * Technical pretenders - While some employees are good quality highly skilled engineers and technicians, the company is only worried about how things appear on the contract. Really just another company worried about getting a resume list for the contract bid, but never worrying about actually applying those talents or even if they actually have the employee represented in the resume submitted. This is a company that sold itself to the government as a cybersecurity firm that could conduct red team testing yet had exactly zero (0) qualified red team testers. They sold themselves as a DEVOPS shop yet had no true DEVOPS engineers on staff. They sell themselves as experts in cloud computing yet had few cloud computing experts. They sell themselves as an AGILE and DEVOPS software shop yet do not hold CMMI certs. The list procedes nicely... In short this is a typical government contracting "body shop." * Clock watchers -- The CEO likes to clock watch. While they profess that they only want the work done the facts differ significantly. There is ABSOLUTELY no flex time allowed. If they say that there is get it on paper and signed. Office hours are 8:00am - 4:30pm , no ifs ands or buts allowed, (its in the employee handbook); be ready to be in the middle of rush hour every day. The CEO tries to micro-manage every employee and if he even thinks you have not been in the office the correct times he will fire you. * No Warning Firings - The CEO basically likes to come in and fire people, seemingly at random, but there is a common thread here -- they never provide a reason at the time of termination. Employees are left guessing as to what exactly went wrong. No prior notification or attempt to correct whatever the percieve deficiency was, just FIRE 'EM! In a period of less than a year I saw about 10 firings (that's 10% of workforce) like this. * High Turnover - combine the CEOs propensity for ad hoc firings with the general paranoia he creates and you get a turnover well above 20% per year. Very, very few people stay beyond one year. - Substandard time off - combined with the inflexibility of work hours and work locations and well -- don't get sick or have a family emergency. Its two weeks PTO a year including sick time. And don't complain about it; after one of the touchy feely "Townhall Thursdays" where an employee asked about time off, he was fired within two weeks because management thought he posted a critical Glassdoor review mentioning PTO, well at least that's what we assumed since the CEO provided no concrete reason to the employee. * Bad HR practices - From an employee handbook that violates the law (Do not disclose your pay rate), to the firing only disciplinary methods, to the terminations for raising questions about employee benefits, and lying to job seekers this is an ethically if not professionally bent HR department. * Know-it-all CEO - The CEO is the COO with about 25 people reporting directly to him. He thinks he knows all factors of all disciplines; sorry, he was an econ major and has very little engineering accumen. He will try and impose his often incorrect view onto all things. He will not listen to reason or technically knowledgeable professionals if he believes something is so.

Hi, It is obvious this poster is quite emotional. We never like to see an employee terminated. Sometimes it is unavoidable, as in this case. Solute has been a successful business for 16 years. In 2017 we grew revenue by almost 40%. Our customers are very happy with our work. Our reputation in our industry is outstanding. We currently have 140 happy and productive engineers. If we did not treat our employees well and provide valuable work to our clients, we would not prosper as we have. And, my first job was working fast food. Running a MacDonald's is hard work! I am not sure I have what it takes, so I will stay here at Solute.
