Cons

When I started at Samsung, the position I accepted and the career growth I was told existed turned out to be drastically different. With 15 years of experience, I was told it was a higher level position that would feed into future leadership opportunities. Instead, the position was more equivalent to an entry level job. When I tried to express my concerns or my desire to grow professionally, upper management ignored it, including HR. When I started at the company, I received minimal training and guidance - and this continued throughout my time at the company. No organized meetings, constant cancellations; my colleagues and I were left to fend for ourselves. Samsung leaders manage out of fear - I’ve actually been fearful to even leave a review about my experience. There is no compassion or empathy in the upper leaders and if you speak out or rub a leader the wrong way/disagree, you will be politically scarred and they will try to work you out if you’re not one of the favorites. The office is incredibly toxic. There is no willingness to help out and if you’re new, veteran employees treat you like you’re an annoyance and will not share their tribal knowledge or help you learn the systems. It’s an incredibly sad and lonely place to work. Mismanagement No growth path Political Unorganized chaos Unfriendly Preach culture but culture is non existent Leaders to not lead Constant reorganization Disconnected HR Zero collaboration

Pros

Company offers decent pay, good benefits, and brand recognition. You will definitely learn a lot in a fast-paced environment and will meet very bright individuals. People end up staying at the company for awhile because it is comfortable in terms of stability, pay raises, and structure for advancement.

Cons

The culture and management are definitely the downfalls of Samsung. The culture will literally change you. It stifles creativity and fosters an environment where you merely do as your told. Each department is extremely siloed and even within departments team members will be very secretive of their work. Within the office, there is such little communication that you can even hear a pen drop. It is a very rigid and competitive culture. Let's just say it is not for the faint of heart. Those that put in longer hours at the office are considered more valuable to the company: all about face-time and not about efficiency. Although there are very bright individuals, a lot of them lack social norms, are unfriendly, and are not the types of people you would want to spend your work week with. Overall, you will learn at the company but it will come at the price of your overall happiness.

Pros

- Global respect and recognition for the Samsung brand - Smart talented employees dedicated to the work. Great experience working with them across functions and around the world - Opportunities to work on exciting / new / innovative products - Nice employee discount on Samsung products - Strong compensation and benefits package (except no profit sharing, stock options/RSUs, etc.)

Cons

- Horrendous culture driven from Korea HQ where life revolves around work (not the other way around). This is the expectation for all employees. Led to awful work/life balance, especially if you have a family or kids. My HR recruiter basically lied to me about the culture ("sold me" if you will). In hindsight I wish I had investigated this part more - Incredibly difficult to get anything done. So much red tape and lots of restrictive policies that cause high levels of frustration. ** example - the company has still not embraced real-time collaboration tools (Slack, Google Drive, etc.) that are standard at literally every other company worldwide. Net results are (1) CRAZY amounts of email and tons of meetings which doesn't leave much time for actual work, and (2) major communication struggles with colleagues around the world Overall I would not recommend working at Samsung if you care about working efficiently, work/life balance or have a family.
