STC manages today as it did 35 years ago. Rather than a decision making process based on truth, facts and ROI's, decisions are based on political connections, tenure within the organization and how much money will it raise. Abusive, hostile treatment of employees is commonplace. Discrimintory practices are ignored, even when raised to Sr. Management. Fiscal responsibility is shallow at best. The HR department in Westport, CT is incompetent, and in need of an audit. There are violations of USAID requirements as well as EEO requirements. For an organization that employs more than 6,000 and has been around for 75 years, I was shocked by what I found.

Save the Children doesn't know what it wants to be when it grows up. As a result, it is a Frankenstein of an organization that doesn't do any one thing all that well (advocacy, charity, development, humanitarian aid). Affiliation with Save the Children International is a colossal mess. Save's bureaucracy outshines that of many of its competitors, which is saying a lot. You have a lot of people in leadership roles who are absolutely unqualified, who don't know anything about your setting, who have the authority to squash initiatives and whose own initiatives, which tend to be wasteful messes, get spotlight and investment. Culture is kind of a game of roulette, with some teams having decent collegiality, but most being pretty void of culture and connection. People team always tried hard to build culture, and were doing everything they should... but it never seemed to make a change. When you have a burned out workforce, decorating desks for halloween only goes so far.
