Company is falling apart

Pros

Good location in downtown core

Cons

1. Healthy startups have a lot of turnover, this is true - but the management at Sensibill is using that as blinders and aren't able to see that the reason it's happening here isn't because of the stage the company is in, it's because there are some very serious underlying issues that they either refuse or don't have the foresight to see. 2. There is no place for petty politics and bureaucratic nonsense at a startup in this stage - most certainly not in engineering 3. The product (engineering-side) is hacked together with tools unbefitting of any company in 2012+ (unless it has too much legacy code to port over to modern tools/services) 4. Relationship between management/HR and engineering feels more adversarial than it does cooperative 5. Talking does nothing. Management keeps repeating the mantra that we should be open and say when we think things are being done wrong, but from experience, doing this achieves nothing so you may as well not even bother 6. It used to be that Sensibill had no name recognition in tech circles in Toronto, now it has bad name recognition in tech circles; which is significantly worse 7. Nothing that you could potentially learn here is transferrable. This extends past tech skills, even 'leadership' skills. The people you're learning from are not the best examples of folks you should be learning from

Pros

Nice, friendly working environment Helpful co-workers Coordinating team and joyful atmosphere Flexible working hours

Cons

General distrust to the engineering team A start-up pretending to be working as an enterprise Dramas in the higher management level that badly impacts the execution Ideas and criticisms are constructive but the delivery is destructive to the morale, especially when messages are delivered to the lower level employees

We’re happy to hear that your experience and interactions with our Sensibillians has been so positive! We take pride in how welcoming and inclusive our team is. For this reason (and many others), we are extremely proud of every single team, and trust them completely. We firmly believe no one team is better than another, and are continuously in awe of how bright, dedicated, and collaborative our tech team is. Evidently, we haven’t demonstrated that well enough, and feedback and recognition is something we’re endeavouring to improve upon as a leadership team. As for the dramas of upper management––appearances aren’t always what they seem! We’re the first to admit that we don’t shy away from challenging each other, or defending ideas we’re passionate about. This can appear combative or unhealthy, but we strongly believe that this is what makes us a stronger unit. Healthy dissent is the lifeblood of our company, and one of the cultural pillars that we expect from each other and all of our employees. We want people who work at Sensibill to be passionate and confident enough to challenge ideas, but respectful enough to be constructive in their delivery. Communication has not been our strength, we know that. The delivery of some of our messages fell flat, and not at all how we intended. We’ve done a lot to examine our communication methods, approach, and style. We’ve recently established a new communication matrix to clarify how and when certain messages will be delivered. We’re working on communication training, too, because we realize that it’s a hard skill that needs to be taught. Thanks for your feedback, we appreciate your candour.

There’s some huge problems in management

Pros

- great location and working environment - great and smart co-workers - decent benefits - flexible hours

Cons

- management is getting toxic and take things very personally - management expecting huge targets with no planning and refusing to take responsibilities upon failure - executives try to run a startup of this size like an enterprise, which is not smart - no career development opportunities for employees - bonus is very low - hard works are not been recognized and difficult to be paid off, promotion is hard for political reasons. - business teams and developer teams are not been valued equally

You’re right, when it comes to our company and our employees, we do take things very personally. We’re passionate about our company’s success and take accountability for every failure. With regards to our huge targets I’d see this as a compliment! It’s a testament to our faith in our employees’ competencies - developers and business teams alike. You’re also right about our lack of planning - we acknowledged this was a shortcoming, which is why we hosted full-day planning offsites for each team, and a lunch and learn for the company as a whole. There will undoubtedly be more skillsets that we need but lack internally, and we’re committed to hiring expertise to fill the gaps and providing training opportunities. With regards to being too enterprise-like, we believe this is a misnomer. We are dedicated to serving our clients, which happen to be large, established financial institutions. These organizations expect us to adhere to their standards. While this means we have to implement process and professionalism, it does not come at the expense of innovation and autonomy. We know that striking a balance––startup culture with enterprise standards––hasn’t been easy, and we are not surprised that some employees have opted out of the journey. We do our best to retain everyone, but unfortunately, there is no one-size-fits-all culture.
