Pros

Sentinel is a great place to work and knows the importance of good work/life balance. The atmosphere in the Grand Rapids office is amazing, and there is great camaraderie. We all work together as a team to get things done. We also have great Management that will go to bat for you when needed.

Cons

Being a Branch office means we don't share all the same perks as our Headquarters, but we more than make up for it with our more intimate work atmosphere. I consider many people I work with to be good friends.

Pros

I've been at Sentinel a long time and can see myself staying here for as long as possible. I work out of the Michigan offices and the comradery amongst those offices is awesome. Some of the people I work with have become my best friends. Leadership in Michigan is the best in any place I've ever worked. The guy who runs the "eastern region" of Sentinel is an amazing leader. If you've ever had a chance to talk to him, you already know this. He's the type of person that, when you make a mistake, doesn't grill you for it - but makes sure that you learn from it and makes top priority out of helping you to fix it and make things right. He exemplifies the very definition of the word "leader" and makes sure that his team comes first. It's great every year to see our local Christmas party grow. What's even more great is to see a great majority of the same faces year over year. As far as technology companies go, turn-over at Sentinel in Michigan is fairly low. Having worked at revolving door companies in the past, this is a very good thing - both for customers and for local employees. Not all people that come to work here are great people, but the great ones manage to stay quite a long time, and the not-so-great ones tend to get ironed out of the situation fairly quickly. That being said, over the years I've seen that employee vetting at the outset is getting better and better, so cases of potential problem employees or employees that don't fit with our fun culture are kept away. There is no room for egos here.

Cons

Within the tech community there are some bad actors. Typically, their mindset stems from the fact that they're very inexperienced, haven't been in the industry for very long, and have high opinions of themselves. They're always right, and everyone else is always wrong. These are the types of people who don't understand that burning bridges is probably the worst thing you can do, especially in the tech industry in Michigan. The tech industry in Michigan is very small, and everyone here knows everyone else. Even among competing companies there are friendships, since all of us know that at any time, people can move around. That's just how it is. Unfortunately, these types of bad actors are ignorant to these facts, and when they think they've been wronged they spend more time being destructive than they do being productive. The result is that they embarrass themselves, typically without knowing it, by trying to play the victim, saying ridiculous things, portraying themselves to the tech community and to employers as a liability, and somehow don't think that potential future employers don't already know their name and what they've done. Fortunately for the rest of us, companies like Sentinel (and our local competitors) quickly learn these peoples' names, and their own actions will make it almost impossible for them to continue to poison our local industry.

Pros

Sentinel overall is a very strong company leading the technology conversation across the nation. I work in Grand Rapids, one of the three Michigan locations. If you want to be part of a great organization that invests in you, promotes from within and has great pay and benefits; Sentinel has all of that. In addition the leadership and culture in Grand Rapids is second to none.

Cons

There is rapid growth here. Always new events and challenges. If you don't like a challenge this may not be the place for you. Sharing of ideas and constant feedback are encouraged. If you like to keep your head down and keep to yourself; this may not be the place for you.
