Pros

Memes in slack are funny. They have access to some nice tools like guru

Cons

Very very messy. I've worked at 4 companies before this one, and none of them have been this loopy. They promised us pay raises, and delayed them multiple times. When the raise did come, they're now telling us that we have to give up ALL of our equity. The RSUs that we were promised when we signed our contract are not ours anymore. How messed up is that? The only way to get a pay raise at Shopify is to give up RSUs which are apart of your compensation. While your direct lead will advocate for you, the people above them are all but clueless. I would like to assume it's because the organization gets reorganized so many times, but the fact of the matter is, the rich people in the org do not care about the workers that support them. Slack channels are heavily moderated. They are closed if they even sense that people are going to talk about a topic like fair wages, equity and diversity. Speaking of diversity, the company isn't diverse at all. Most of leadership is white while the workers under them are people of colour. You may have heard of the mass layoffs in the news, but you'd be surprised to know that the company has been doing silent layoffs before and after that fact. Workload is unmanageable. People keep leaving and there is no replacements hired to take their workload, instead they just shove it on everyone else. If you want to work at an organization that does not care for your mental health or wellbeing, Shopify is the way to go

Pros

Splendid coworkers Trips sometimes League benefits Food credits sometimes

Cons

The organization uses you as a stomping ground for it's biggest clients. The job is incredibly hard and the pay is extraordinarily low. There's talks of pay raises but they've been delayed so many times. Only white people in leadership, and the few Woman of colour in middle management roles barely get a say or seat at the table. Racial microagressions happen all the time, and if you're a woman it's 100x worse. The company will allow clients to berate you all so they can keep their 2k a month revenue from them. The working hours are long, you wake up and start working from your bed because the pings start coming in early. You end up staying online till about 8 or 9pm everyday, and you even have to work on weekends or during your time off. You aren't allowed to suggest too many boundaries with your clients, a few times you'll even be expected to be in slack channels with them. They call themselves an organization that "Thrives on change," but as soon as processes starts showing promise, they change things recklessly to give random people promotions. For example, my coworkers planned this amazing conference in Miami, where people gained an understanding of eachother and there was a lot of work done to align multiple teams. What happened when we got back? Folks who were jealous that they didn't get to go on the trip decided to reorganize the entire company and split up everyone who bonded and aligned. Made no sense at all. You get no breaks, not even lunch, expected to work 24/7. 1000 people were laid off with no empathy. Those who didnt get laid off ended gotta pick up the slack. No counselling for those with survivors guilt or talks of allowing us to take a break. Lots of favoritism, some people will get assigned all the easy clients while others get more complex ones. Overall Low pay, racial microagressions, crazy hard work, abusive clients. 100% not worth it. Shopify is all hype and nothing more. Stay far away

Pros

Nice teammates and we got to go to Miami (Seems like this will never happen again)

Cons

Destroyed my mental health. The job requirements are not clear enough, and you're expected to just deal with everyones abuse. You have to work beyond the regular 9-5 hours. You put in big 4 consulting gig hours without the pay. Compensation is really low and the company gives you the runaround on when they will increase your pay. I've been at Shopify for 3 years and still making the same money I did when I started. PTO is unlimited but you will still be hounded by managers and salespeople expecting you to provide them information and do work for them on your time off. The salespeople at the company low-tier, and none of them know a thing about the product. This in turn leads to my team getting a plethora of upset merchants. I have never worked at an organization where the salespeople were THIS bad. No accountability or clawbacks for sales either, so you're just left to deal with their crap. My team has gone through multiple leaders and reorganizations, hard to understand what we're even doing or what our goal is. We also have very silly impact reviews but you're never actually given actionable feedback, and your rating almost always comes as a surprise to you. I've seen my rating change after the fact, months later, with no explanation. Very sketchy. No transparency from Management. They put on little AMA sessions where they just answer all the easy questions then pretend to not see the tougher ones. The company laid off 10% of their staff in the most unapologetic and inhuman way imaginable. No accountability from leadership who messed up, just crocodile tears in a livestream. The rich people at this company stayed rich while the poorer folks got let go.
