Pros

Wage, retirement, people, U.S. company

Cons

Poor management, realize you’re just an expendable number. They can’t even provide uniforms, you’re expected to provide all of your working attire that will be destroyed in short order.

Pros

- Campus is very nice with a cafe on site, sitting areas, and access to Jump Park. - Free parking provided by the company - It's a cubicle based (not "open office") with stand/sit desks and plenty of storage - Company is very long term oriented, they expect to retain you for your entire career and support intra-company moves - A great place for general careers: Analysts, Accountants, Business, Project Management. The business side is the boss here, technology is beholden to them. - 40+ hours company, teams understand capacity and will try to not overwork you. Most employees work more than 40 hours, but your boss won't bother you for only working 40 as long as you are available.

Cons

- Rely heavily on older technology, command line scripts, SSIS, SQL 2012, etc. They are trying cloud but not doing very good at it. - Waterfall. If you are used to agile development you will be pulling your hair out at the processes. - Outsource almost all development work, third party vendors are often fired for doing poor work and the poor code is handed off to internal teams - Key-person issues, knowledge sharing is minimal it's very common for one person or less to know how something works. - Centralized ticket system is ancient and avoided by almost everyone as much as possible, you need to reach out to specific individuals to get anything done - Lacking in Software "Engineering" ability, all code is a horrible mess of tech debt that will never get fixed. No reuse-ability, no standard practices, hard to read, no unit tests, and no design. Yet replacing or fixing old code is heavily discouraged, more time will be spend troubleshooting 10-20 year old scripts than writing anything stable. - 40+ hours company, due to fragility of systems it's likely you will work outside normal hours. Many employees work 50-60+ hours a week, the longer you are there the more expected this becomes as you become more of a Key-person - Extremely large number of meetings, because the systems are so needlessly complex, no one understands them, and as waterfall is the development style nothing can be done until every single thing is figured out and requirements written out. - Technical growth is limited. No Udemy. Growth is more about understanding arcane systems than picking up skills or developing ability.

Pros

1. Working in downtown Boise is great, you are near the river and plenty of great activities. 2. The building itself is new pretty cool to look at, has a cafeteria (although they raised prices by 50% while I was employed) 3. Level 4 employees (Level 5 is management and above) and below are all very nice and helpful 4. Decent pay and benefits, although that's less the case now that more remote work is available. 5. Good work life balance, other than month end you will not likely need to put in any more than 40 hours weeks.

Cons

1. Things can be quite unorganized, the turnover is very high and management is constantly scrambling to get things assigned and reassigned so it never feels like you tasks are set. 2. Moving up is difficult, recruiters and even management like to preach the possibilities but really it'll likely be 4-5 years before you can even dream of moving into management. 3. As stated earlier level 5 and above is management, and level 3 is Senior positions. There are very few level 4 positions and some groups have none so you either have to make a two level jump to management or change groups. Adding more level 4 positions would benefit the company. 4. On that same note I feel they really only care about your experience at Simplot. Anything you did before got you your current position but is now not important. 5. I personally have a CPA which I got while there and no one seemed to care in the least as far as advancement or raises. 6. There's a little of a cult like vibe from the whole place, my first few weeks I'd often hear things like "the family wants this or that," referencing ownership. Was not a fan of that. 7. There are a lot of pointless meetings, some that came up due to COVID but then like COVID never seemed to want to go away. 8. During recruiting they will bring up a "generous" bonus, this bonus is for a fiscal year that ends in August. They will not however pay it out until December 31st, and if you get another job in those four months you lose said bonus. So basically they hold you hostage in your position for 33% of the year, holding it over your head. 9. Job descriptions are purposefully vague to the point that you probably will have no idea what job you are agreeing to take, and little idea of what questions to ask in the interview. Descriptions basically amount to "do accounting things."
