Women Beware

Pros

There is a good education benefit but you don't have the possibility of working flexible or reduced hours to take advantage of it. The benefits are great and you will be reminded of how great the benefits are while you work for less money.

Cons

All jobs require a degree or previous experience. Women, who are more likely to not have a degree, will find limited options for growth. Experience will not hold the same weight as a degree when your salary is considered. Should you try to step into a role that is a big step above your current job title be aware that ST will base your ST salary on your current salary so you will be asked to do the same work as others but at a lower salary. It will take multiple years before your salary will be reviewed enough times to warrant being granted the same salary as others in your department. This will be sold as "internal equity".

Sound Transit Response

Thank you for your feedback. We are committed to creating a transparent and inclusive environment for all our employees so we are disappointed to hear about some of your experiences. We value and consider all feedback as we continue to find ways to enhance our compensation and benefit programs. We wanted to address a couple of your specific concerns here. First, we have made a committed effort to address internal equity within Sound Transit based on feedback from our employee survey. HR completed a large compensation study in November of 2017, which aligned both men and women compa-ratios to 97 percent. We will continue in 2018 with a study to be completed in October. In order to be completely transparent in our pay practices, we are currently training managers and employees on our compensation program and processes, which includes our annual compensation study process. Second, HR has completed workplace flexibility focus groups and will be recommending a new workplace flexibility program. This program will address many flexibility aspects but will also include flexibility options for employees who would benefit from furthering educational needs. This program expected to roll out in late 2018. Again, thank you for your ongoing contribution and feedback.

Stable but limited

Pros

Work here because you believe in the mission of public transit, because you’ve burnt out at higher pressure jobs and want to relax into a more reasonable pace, or because you want the peace of mind of knowing you will still have your job tomorrow, even if it does not come with lots of growth opportunities.

Cons

Financial career growth is limited (at least in the IT and Communications worlds). It is generally known that if you want to be at Sound Transit in the long run but you also want to make more money, the best plan is to get a few years under your belt here, move to a different company for a big title bump, and then turn around and come back here for another title bump later. Staying here and growing through the ranks has left many long-term employees at the same salary that newbies are coming in at.

Pros

Great place to work. Challenging work but supportive environment and very dedicated people. A lot of training and skills advancement opportunities.

Cons

Everyone has an opinion about the agency so no social event is safe if you tell people where you work. Lower pay than private sector.
