Pros

Middle management is trying very hard to make the merger work despite the fact that SpartanNash is still being run like a west Michigan company. Positive attitude from troops on the ground despite overwhelming challenges around warehousing, archaic merchandising methodology. Strong support of independent grocers.

Cons

Awful retail operator. No long term vision. Culture is a real problem as is involving staff in remote locations. Refuses to innovate on owned retail side of the house. VERY poor executive leadership team. CEO has little to no understanding of complex retail concepts. Merchandising, Operations and Marketing are all stuck in the mud.

Pros

10% associate discount, encouraged to give back to the community, lots of hard workers in non management positions

Cons

Management SUCKS. The people managing the IT systems barely understand the technology they “own” for the business and value their own opinions over the experts they hire under them. Some of these managers only IT qualifications come from working for a tech company h in the 80s before becoming “lifers”. Management almost always values their own ideas/conclusions over a new or fresh approach. Constantly lagging behind their competitors on technology. Scared of change. Company culture of working hard rather than smart. Director level and above positions seem to only manage “upward” aka they care about impressing their superiors but demand/demean those under them. This is the kind of company where anyone with good skills and a hard working attitude burns out and quits within a few years, because they aren’t valued or given opportunities to shine. Overtime is always expected despite the whole “family friendly culture” that PR team pushes. Benefits are measly for non-executives.

Horrible leadership

Pros

I can't think of any right now other than it was steady work.

Cons

The sexist men leading the company, coupled with the sad examples of leadership among management is making everyone who works there miserable. They don't even have basic decency figured out when letting people go, and are so wrapped up in the hierarchy that they don't allow for constructive disagreements. The building is a beige cubicle farm, there is no culture to speak of and even HR is a disaster. I never once saw them do an exit interview with any of the many employees fleeing that company. If you are out of work and have to have a job I understand accepting an offer. Otherwise, if you are on the fence about whether this is a good career move... it's not, run.
