Blue-collar Construction Business trying to act like a Technology Product Company

Pros

Swisslog Healthcare is a great place to work out if you want to have first-hand experience with all of the wrong ways to run a company in 2018: 1) Command and control culture of B- / C players who are hanging on by their fingernails to their jobs while choking out any A players who threaten their roles as most of the N. American and Divisional executives are unemployable elsewhere at the same level of responsibility, lack any contemporary technology or operatating skills and are largely overpaid while the blue-collar workers suffer and are scape-goated. 2) Experience operating under a 1980's baby-boomer waterfall model of product development where there are countless iterations on old-fashioned written business plans (called the SPR process) before nameless (and clueless) executives in Zurich mindlessly weigh in via the telephone on all the problems with the excel spreadsheet in year-3 of the model vs. taking a modern approach to test and learn and MVP deployment patterns common in Fortune-2000 companies today. 3) See and experience -- in real-life -- senior executives who truly believe that the internet and cloud computing are a fad -- and that it will go away (and especially loathing anything to do with AWS or Azure). The product development engineers here in Denver all joke that the CTO's "Cloud Ready" approach to the cloud = "Game Over" for Swisslog. 4) Experience a "bullying" CTO with no prior executive or software experience who's has been rumored to corner employees in attempts to shake them down in order to get them to align to his command-and-control world view of waterfall product development. Everyone is amazed in the U.S. that this behavior is tolerated. There is no "whistle-blower" hotline and HR is indifferent -- so employees under him don't know what to do except to leave. 5) A CEO who says the company is growth-oriented when every spare dollar is allocated to EBITDA to feed KUKA AG (parent company) which chokes off any real product development efforts. 6) Complete and utter lack of focus on the customer.

Cons

1) It's a hot market - if you're an exceptional or even good software or cloud engineer - don't even think about joining this company as you will not be successful. This is not a company focused on building world class products. It's primary focus is on selling pneumatic tube services. 2) The Denver office has zero amenities other than water and terrible coffee. 3) There is no equity compensation in the form of options or RSA's. Avoid this company as nearly all companies today offer some form of equity. 4) Vacation PTO is not competitive. 5) Healthcare benefits are not competitive. 6) Turnover in Product Development in Denver and Kirkland is 30-40% with morale very low and everyone looking to leave or being recruited away by year end if they are any good.

Pros

Seems progressive from the outside.........but once INSIDE........helter skelter

Cons

Second official work week....schedule for 12 hour days EACH DAY...indicative of scheduling problems. Company robbed people off the job to "work elsewhere" Third week.....scheduled for 16 hour days.....EACH DAY.........and one of my co-workers informed me that he had just finished a job where they worked him 30+ hours of OT EACH WEEK. On this job they robbed TWO workers to go to other sites.

The waterfall is sweeping Talyst away

Pros

Talyst was great! Loyal customers. Best In KLAS solution. Great people who did everything possible to help customers and each other.

Cons

Swisslog acquired Talyst last year and its been downhill ever since. Everything is about saving enough to feed the parent company cash. Leadership keeps saying how important the Kirkland office (the Talyst team) is to their future, but they are running all the good people off like rats leaving a sinking ship. (They even have a dress code. What software company has a dress code? And uses waterfall decision-making processes?) It used to be fun to work here, but now everyone is frustrated because we aren't allowed to do what is right for our customers. More will leave. And customers will leave. I just have to ask why Swisslog ever acquired us, since they are doing everything possible to drive us out.
