Not a Cessna family anymore

Pros

Currently there are still a lot of people at Cessna that want to do a good job and want to share ideas. These people have been around since Cessna built their first jet. It's a great place to get experience in the aviation industry.

Cons

When I started at Cessna, they wanted people to be part of the Cessna family. Those words aren't spoken anymore. Textron has taken full control of the company and their only goal is to squeeze every last cent out of their subsidiaries for their stock holders. In order of importance, share holder are at the top followed by executives, customers and then employees. I've always believed if you really take care of the customer, the share holder part would take care of itself with customer loyalty. Our current Cessna President was brought in from GE to squeeze the company for Textron. In order to stay with the company, plan on only saying yes and never turn down a chance to volunteer for more work than you can handle. Cessna has taken on the GE practice of taking the bottom 10% of people with good reviews and bumping them down a grade which puts them on the list for candidates at the next layoff. The future of Cessna is high turnover, maximum work in an extremely lean working environment and employee to employee predatory working environment. If you want to raise a family, aviation is a poor choice due to its constant instability, Cessna just increases the frequency of how often you wonder if your job is secure. Is the aircraft market bad or is it just time for the yearly review again? Cessna isn't a family anymore.

Pros

It is an ok place to work. It is a fairly laid back and a low pressure environment. Most people are friendly.

Cons

The rating system they use to give raises, promotions, etc needs a lot of improvement. The amount of paperwork done far outweighs the amount of design work you will do as an engineer. Pay is not that competitive compared to other aircraft companies in town.

Pros

Cessna was an excellent experience for me, even though our business unit was closed. I learned valuable lessons in Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, and how excellent communication and planning can improve productivity.

Cons

The aircraft industry in general is quite volatile, and employment can be influenced by the fluctuating economy. Our business unit was the first that Cessna had purchased in many years, producing the all-composite TTX. Unfortunately, the turn in the economy all but eliminated sales for this model.
