Thrown to the wolves

Pros

Learn a lot quickly through fear and intimidation

Cons

Too many to list They treat you like a disposable piece of cloth yet constantly say “we’re a family company”. Will make fun of you for your age, race, home situation. Forced everyone in the main offices to go to work during the ENTIRE pandemic (yep even the first couple of months when things were still very scary) because we were an “essential business” despite the job easily being able to be done at home. In reality they just wanted to be able to make sure there employees were working and “not watching TV”. So essentially they trust there employees as far as they can throw them. Will literally scream at you and ask you “do you not care” if you make a mistake. Could not think of a worst place to work during this last year to be honest. Do NOT trust these reviews of 5 stars, they are extremely suspicious. Maybe working on a job site is different but avoid the corporate offices like the plague.

One of the worst companies I've worked for.

Pros

The single best thing about working for the Walsh Group/Archer Western is the health benefits. Cheap but actually very good. That's about, that's the only thing this company offers that is better than what you might find elsewhere.

Cons

Where to start? There is a total disconnect between office personnel and field personnel. Field personnel is seen almost as inferior to office guys and we are treated poorly compared to them. We get zero PTO, zero sick days, zero holiday pay. They don't give you holiday pay but will force you to be off work multiple days depending on what day the holiday falls. Good luck paying bills with 3 days on you check. If you have any sort of family I highly suggest looking for a different company to work for. Walsh Group offers zero work life balance for hourly individuals. Nearly every good review already on here is from a Salaried person, if you plan on working in the office as a salaried employee then this might be a good company. If you intend to be out in the field as an hourly employee, one of the ones who actually get their hands dirty building the project, then look elsewhere. I promise you will regret working for the Walsh Group as an hourly employee.

Not quite the "Employer of Choice"

Pros

The individual people who work in the company are pretty nice and easy to get along with. The building is very close to the blue line and the Metra.

Cons

There is absolutely no flexibility to work from home for any reason. The PTO policy was recently updated (so that you no longer got a PTO payout upon your departure from the company) and it was kept secret - no mass communication was sent out until employees started to find out and complain. There is next to no room for growth because the people at the top have been at the company for 20+ years. You can basically only move up when someone retires. Throughout the pandemic, the offices remained open. The reason no working from home was/is allowed is because "The day we can pour concrete from home is the day we will allow work from home flexibility." As if office workers pour concrete... The parking lot is full of potholes and the building is very dark and dim - the only windows are in the various manager offices. Their tagling "Employer of Choice" always feels like a slap in the face.
