Pros

Exciting to serve the country and be at the center of policy debate. Significant opportunities to influence public policy and rise within the Senate.

Cons

Long hours and sharp elbows. Salary is capped at approximately $175,000 and opportunities for advancement are limited when you reach senior positions.

Pros

-Make connections with the nation's most powerful people (and future leader's): members, staff and lobbyists. -Great experience for individuals fresh out of college. Makes transition from college to the "real world" easier as there are lots of young 20-somethings. -Opportunity to become party of history -- enjoy being at the center of everything going on. -GREAT benefits and generous vacation days - most offices close during the holidays so you don't have to use vacation days during this time. -Plus: Invitations to great parties

Cons

-Compensation is below what you could make working in the private sector -While I worked for an amazing members, I heard horror stories of abusive bosses (though I think these are rare or urban legends) -Inflated egos: unfortunately there are staffers who think the raised gold seal on the busienss card makes them important. -Chaos...and not always organized chaos. It's not uncommon for late night votes and even all nighters. -Little job protection, unless your member was recently reelected.
