Pros

PTO is loaded up front, so you use it or lose it. It's nice having all the pto ready for use for the year. The EdAssit tuition assistance is reasonable too.

Cons

C-Level does not listen to the employees. The majority of employees do not want to return to the office, whether our commute is an hour, or if you're within 60 miles, that's all that matters. Leadership is disconnected from their employee's wants and needs. We are very business heavy in IT, with not enough leaders having the background to properly steer or help effectively collaborate on what works with business leadership. The co-payment process for health insurance leaves a lot of your appointments unpaid, with you receiving the balance of the bill after the appt.

Pros

401k is great. Pay is good.

Cons

Leadership is actively trying to change the culture and replace it with something much much worse. USAA used to have a very large remote workforce. They are recalling remote employees. Internal mobility is impossible if you are remote and you are disqualified for any posting if you are remote. Executive leadership has short average tenure at company. New CHRO more concerned with appearances and platitudes and hasn’t enacted anything substantially valuable since joining while dismantling great work. Benefits are slowly being swapped out for lesser products/options. At the time this is being posted, many employees are scared they are going to lose their jobs or will have to completely redesign their lives to keep it.

Pros

Pay is competitive, good health insurance options, generous 2-for-1 401k match for the first 4% of your salary.

Cons

Leadership is woke and pushes liberal political views. They recently were in the headlines for “requiring” employees (including WFH) to submit their covid shot status even though the FAQs said it was optional. This wasn’t a one-time typo, they continued to call it “mandatory” and “required” even after employees asked for clarification. USAA has been going through regulatory woes for the last several years after they grew too fast and became a “big bank”. Recently it seems the culture has been changing into a big bureaucracy. I’ve felt very siloed and it can be frustrating to get things done. I’ve not been impressed with many USAA software engineers’ skills. If you’re looking to grow as an engineer, there are probably better places. Career growth is quite ambiguous and political.
