Pros

Great individual contributors Great PTO allocation Great ESOP Hourly pay for billable overtime when salaried

Cons

Upper management abandons middle management and gives them no authority to enact change. The majority of the engineering success is on the shoulders of a few with little accountability for the many. Large focus on contemporary societal issues, less focus on engineering execution and internal growth & communication. Engineering Salary has lagged industry.

Pros

- Remote work - Work & Life balance - Great leadership - Great company structure - Company that cares - Company that understands - Company that is invested in employee growth - Great benefits - Competitive salary

Cons

- Remote work has pros/cons. Connectivity being one of the cons. It’s a given in a remote world just by default, and Ulteig deals with this the best I’ve seen any company deal with it. Still a con, but as ‘good’ as a con can get due to the strides Ulteig takes to make this work for every employee

Thanks so much for taking the time to write such a thorough and thoughtful review about your experiences at Ulteig. I think your comments on remote work are spot on. Our commitment to flexibility and trust we place in employees to make their best choices for their workplace can reduce connectivity in some cases. We are placing a strong emphasis on connectivity right now to make sure folks are feeling a strong sense of belonging with their colleagues. Thanks for the advice on communicating on company-wide initiatives.

Pros

Good culture, flexible schedule, you can work from home

Cons

Ulteig substation department is swamped with project work. Deliverables being late used to be rare, but now it is happening a lot more often. It won’t affect you much if you know how to say no to work and manage your own workload, but I feel like Ulteig is not performing well at this time and one of our biggest clients is starting to see it. The company is also starting to get really top heavy with more leadership, while it seems we are struggling to maintain individual contributors at the lower levels with people leaving.

Thank you for taking the time to write about your current experience at Ulteig. I think you make a fair point about the abundance of work, especially in some areas of the business. We are definitely paying a great deal of attention to the growth-related challenges you mention. There is a lot of work available in the broader marketplace, and we certainly are winning our share. The tight labor market and attrition trends across the industry are a challenge that we are seeing as well. We remain committed to adding staff and increasing our overall capacity to meet the demand. In fact, we’ve hired roughly two new folks for everyone who departs. Additionally, we are partnering closely with our teams and clients to ensure follow-through on our commitments and pursuit of continuous improvement opportunities where appropriate. Ultimately, Ulteig is in it to help our clients be successful, and the overall business is performing well. With regard to your point about leadership, we definitely have scaled the leadership in line with growth. At a more senior level of leadership, the growth in headcount has been nowhere near the level of the growth of the overall business. The growth in leadership has occurred much more below senior leadership level, especially at the supervisor and manager level. This has been intentional to create more opportunities to coach and mentor team members and build better overall engagement between people leaders and their teams. This also has created a lot of development opportunities for individuals who aspire to take on greater levels of responsibility. Thanks again for the feedback.
