Pros

Snacks Many good coworkers (unfortunately most of them have left). Some good managers in Engineering / Data Science

Cons

Little direction. Whiplash changes on a regular basis made it difficult to plan or focus. Some of the worst upper management I've had the experience of working with (GE executives ran the company into the ground for 18 months, then left). Not a performance based culture. Work as hard or as little as you want, it won't matter when layoffs come around. Sunday thoughts.

Pros

1) The people were generally pretty great to work with 2) A lot of technology to learn about if you come from a previous company lacking of tech 3) The idea behind the company seems interesting 4) Snacks on snacks on snacks 5) The hours are pretty good

Cons

I think the main issue with uptake is upper management. There's not a lot of honesty or accountability when it comes to performance at uptake as a whole. Because of this, mediocre management are allowed to continue failing. The worst part is that these incompetent people tend to hire other incompetent people and the cycle continues. Some realistic framework needs to be put in place to keep people honest and force under performers to either perform or get let go. I think the CEO relies too much on trust when it comes to performance. Without a proper performance review framework, trust becomes luck. Another big issue I saw was the uptake tried to do too many things at once. They became the jack of all trades but the master of none. The mantra of uptake was to "just get it working". That's great for a hackathon but terrible for a product based business. This led to poorly made products that ultimately needed to be re-worked or thrown away. This is the definition of technical debt. Uptake did this for almost all products. It seemed like uptake was in some race where the only participant was uptake. This goes back to the incompetent management mentioned above. They cared too much about the optics of finishing some short term milestone that they were willing to throw the long term health and goals of the product away. Finally, I'm going to have to mention the technical side since I am a software engineer after all. Uptake had one of the worst technical foundations I have ever seen. This was a demo led company. Everyone just cared about the demo so much that people cut corners to finish it off. You cannot make a sound foundation by cutting corners ever 2 weeks to meet some arbitrary internal demo. Developers would create something that barely worked and then build on top of that for the following demo with another thing that barely worked. Eventually there is so much stuff built on top of a shaky foundation that it becomes a house of cards. Again this boils down to management. They might understand tech but they surely don't understand how to build a technical platform. What works for a webapp based company doesn't work for a platform based company. The processes that work for an established company may not work for a greenfield startup. The worse part is that management doesn't know what "good" looks like. Without knowing what is good and what is bad, one cannot make a framework to guide decisions or judge performance.

Pros

The work was very interesting, and engineers had broad discretion on how to solve the tasks put before them. There were many talented engineers to collaborate with and learn from. The office space, internal groups, and tech stack are some of the best I've worked with.

Cons

Extreme attrition and outsourcing have moved the few revenue-generating parts of the business to the background. The pivot to the new platform was an interesting move, but the Chief Architect is laughably incompetent at writing software according to modern standards of test-ability or usability.
