Pros

I think about the only pros for me were proximity to home and my coworkers

Cons

Pay is awful and not fair. Call policy is terrible. The only way you get paid time and half for call backs is to work 40 hours a week. If you’re PRN or part time you will never get time and a half for for call backs. Retention is low so always short staffed. The hospital expects you to do more with less. HR does not see the value in being a sonographer, especially if you’re specialized. Always seemed like they believed you could easily be replaced. Almost never got an uninterrupted 30 min lunch. There was also hardly anywhere for employees to go to take a break from the work place. Some people don’t have to put in the work to get raises and advance the career ladder like others do. Nurses got treated better than anyone else at the hospital. A nurse manager runs the echo labs with no understanding of the ins and outs of the job. They try to make changes without trying to understand it. Also parking is outrageous. Nobody should be paying $90 a month to park their car for work

Pros

Benefits-good insurance but not as good as when they had Anthem

Cons

Turnover, insurance they have wrangles you into a corner to only go to their hospital, their specialists etc. company store type insurance. God help you if you have an emergency surgery at another hospital, you will pay dearly. Oh, and you will pay for parking. the only hospital in richmond that charges their employees parking fees. and forget security in the parking lots, they pretty much did away with that and put up some cameras., u are on your own. they will have security walk you to your car if you want to wait for someone for safety.

Role is severely undervalued

Pros

There are plenty of opportunities available to gain experience through internal internships.

Cons

VCU Health does not want to pay. I believe this title was "created" to prevent job searchers from learning that they'll be severely underpaid compared to similar roles with other companies. I was there for 21 months before I received my first raise. Not a single bonus for anyone in my role for a company that has celebrated about $250M in revenue each year I've been there. For the workload (approximately 65 calls per day), I've determined that you'll be better served working in fast food or Walmart.
