Pros

Great place to work. Very employee focused with an emphasis on work-life balance. Great benefits (more importantly 401k program is great - matching and annual profit sharing contribution) Great employee programs - training, wellness, and corporate events

Cons

Politics Favoritism - a lot of road blocks and promotions are often times based on favoritism rather than merit and performance. Traditional Promotions do not exist - HR requires a new position to be created within the department (requiring additional headcount budget approvals - very difficult) - then the person to be promoted must apply with the risk that others will apply as well.

Pros

The place has great benefits and a really wonderful work life balance. The people are really nice and the mission statement is encouraging.

Cons

Sometimes the workforce can be a bit slow due to the large size of the company and complacency in some roles.

Pros

Innovation is becoming more and more central to the business model both within corporate culture and in our downtown Sacramento innovation hub (aka. The SHOP). We also have an east coast branch of The SHOP. Our CEO is incredibly forward-thinking. All leadership has an open-door policy, including our CEO. Benefits are great and comprehensive. While pay may not be the highest, it is benchmarked globally and is reasonably competitive. For those looking to build a career, the many lines of business at our Rancho Cordova headquarters offer endless opportunities. For those just getting out of college and not knowing where to begin, the call center is an incredible way to get your foot in the door and build a foundation both for moving up within or outside the company. HR offers a comprehensive list of career development classes. Diversity and fun are inherent in VSP's culture.

Cons

Some positions offer greater work-life balance while others do not. Members of leadership often struggle to connect with employees consistently during peak season.

Pros

Benefits are decent and 401k contribution is great at 10% for now + 5% matching. Salary and security is good. If you come into the company at entry level and hit the ground running, you'll advance quickly. There are cultural elements of the company to keep it a nice place to work. Regardless of what some may say about HR, they try hard to be neutral and make sure there are training available for personal and career development. Great place to hit the ground running and get promoted, get trained, and get some education paid for...then leave and come back to get around the Salary/Management Glass Ceiling.

Cons

There is a continual decline in benefits which use to offset the salary compared to other companies. Promotional guidelines and merit increases seemed geared towards thinning the population of long term employees; those coming in new over the past years really have no idea how excellent the environment used to be. The company used to talk about how extraordinary we are but over the year the dialogue has changed to "...this is Best Practice...". It will be just a matter of time before the 401K contribution is slimmed down just the the medical. Then there is the Non-stop political infighting between departments which is at intolerable levels (particularly with the Sales department...awful back-stabbing managers!). The volume of work demanded of everyone is unsustainable.

Pros

Decent benefits, and average salary for the area. Nice people who work there and a relaxed environment.

Cons

It's not about the quality of your work but how much people like you that will get you promoted.

Pros

VSP is a 60 year old company that provides consumer charity services, and strongly believes in giving back to the community., As an employee there are promotional and growth opportunities for both individual contributors and management. VSP provides an excellent 401K plan and a robust health benefit package.

Cons

The company is growing so fast that it's workforce struggles to keep up. It could do better in offering competitive salaries now that the economy is improving.

Pros

Location is great. People are amazing! We have a leadership dedicated to growing the company and invest time and opportunities with the staff. There are opportunities for employees to be here long-term (and it's OK if short-term is your path).

Cons

Benefits are OK (I actually changed mine this year because spouse's workplace's were better). Compensation is OK.
