Pros

You get the stability of one of the most recognized brands in the US. It is a great place with the right manager. Really good benefits and tuition reimbursement is really nice if _you_ make the time to use it- and you should! It won't be easy but it can definitely be done. There is lots of room for improvement! Learn how to get things done. Don't get frustrated if you have to make five phone calls to get your answer. When you get to that fifth person they will know everything about your question and might even be an industry expert! Keep the faith.

Cons

Almost impossible to move around or up in the company. Verizon likes to hire from outside and is not really interested in your professional growth. The only way up is to leave for another company unfortunately. You can use the tuition to learn a new technology and then go use it at another company but it is rare to be able to grow. Managers are insecure to tell their managers that their requests are unreasonable or repetitive and the stuff just rolls downhill. You'll fill out more spreadsheets which are never opened than you thought possible. Having reports generated from the systems you use is impossible and management would prefer not to change what they have been doing for years and years. It has to change and it will but it is so frustrating at a contributor role if you know how much better it can be.

Pros

The benefits package is probably one of the best. Pay is good, especially if you are coming in new and negotiate. Camaraderie within and across the teams is excellent.

Cons

It's common to work 10-12 hour days. Projects are done with fewer and fewer people, leaving those with high levels of personal accountability trying to do the work of multiple people. Layoffs happen at least annually and no one is safe.

Pros

Health benefits, tuition assistance, high pay potential. Better opportunities outside of retail, if you play the game to get there.

Cons

Creative pay cuts. One such way to curb earnings is raising quotas. Quotas are set based on past performance as well as other mysterious factors. A high performing year across the board will be followed by a year with much lower paychecks. Your income can fluctuate as much as 35%. The company prides itself on its integrity fueled credo. However, the majority of growth (new lines) is gained by tricking customers. Lowering the plan and adding a tablet or jetpack, that the majority of customers rarely use, is the primary strategy. Most people are unaware that they could lower their bill without taking the additional item. I've seen too many sleazy business practices at Verizon. You are pressured to do this "with integrity". This also drives up quotas, creating an unsustainable downward spiral of ethics. I've seen firsthand sales reps flat out lie to customers habitually and get a slap on the wrist followed by awards for sales excellence. You can get by without doing these things, but be prepared to walk in the shadows of people like this, which includes being criticized for your lower performance. There are skillful, honest reps that have high performance, but I firmly believe that they live in a grey area between integrity and deceit (is there such a thing?). Get used to saying, "Sir, I can give you this tablet/jetpack for the same price per month that you are paying now." If the customer doesn't respond with, "Can't i just lower my bill and not take the tablet/jetpack?" you get a new line. After all, isn't it the customer's fault for not knowing? That's integrity, right?
