We do recognize that pay is low. It is a statewide crisis what we can pay Direct Support Professionals based upon what we are reimbursed from the state of Ohio. The Columbus Dispatch did a four part series about our low reimbursement rates which translates into low wages and we are marching on Capital Hill this Thursday for better wages for our DSP's. We are doing everything we can to support our employees who do so much for people in need.

A Disgrace

Pros

The individuals being served are amazing and will brighten even your darkest day. Once a bond is formed; the love just starts pouring in. They trust you and are excited to see you everyday. The bonuses at your 6 month and 12 month periods are okay.

Cons

Training is lacking in certain areas. When you start initially with Med certs, CPR and Aegis training its okay but when it comes to training in the individual homes, you are left to figure things out. You get a lot of attitude from current staff and Program managers because their work loads are overwhelming. PMs DO NOT do their jobs. They get upset when work conditions are being reported to the county. Pay rates are ridiculous. Please pay these workers decent pay because the pay is way to low and not competitive in today's market.

Thank you for your post, I really appreciate it. It pains me to say this but you are right on many of your points. We do need to do a better job of recognizing employees and not making it so arbitrary. Our employees go above and beyond every day and we need to make them feel like the heroes they are. I also agree that we need to do a better job of onboarding and training giving our employees the tools they need to deliver the best service possible. I can assure you we are working on this as a top priority. Finally, I agree with your comment on pay rates. They are ridiculous because what we get paid is ridiculous. When every provider is getting paid ridiculously low rates by the State, the rates we can pay are locked in. That is why you see every Provider paying the same rates. Thank you again for your post, I am working on the areas you outlined and can say with confidence they will get fixed!

Thank you for your post. There was an article in the Dayton Daily News this weekend highlighting the low reimbursement rates we are paid as providers which translates into lower pay and benefits. We are working diligently to address this national crises.
