Pros

The “mission” is cool. Weight loss coaching is a cool topic.

Cons

The company is going down a horrible path with AI. They took off limits off our panels because of AI so we are helping way more members with no increase in pay. My panel is over 350 people that I coach. Just today alone I have to send over 138 CUSTOMIZED messages 3 coaching calls, and I still haven’t seen how many cold calls I have to do. As a health coach you will never actually coach. You will have so much work that it will force you to use AI to do your job for you, so all day all you do is prompt AI then get on coaching calls with members. I used to deeply love coaching, but wow, I can’t wait to leave. If you don’t want to end up disliking coaching, this job is NOT IT. There are jobs out there that will pay you fairly and respect you. Virta acts like they respect you with pretty mission corporate talk, but when you come at them with concerns that are valid they just throw that same mission and how we need to just figure it out and work harder in our faces.

Pros

Good coworkers, positive mission, pretty good benefits.

Cons

Firstly, do not trust the 5 star reviews you see here. They are being pushed by the recruitment team to bolster the overall company score. Secondly, Virta is just like any company - there are good things and there are bad things. The interesting thing is, Virta leadership does not want to do anything about the bad things. They either do not think the bad things are really bad things, or they care too much about other things (money) to fix the bad things. There are a lot of egos in leadership who refuse to believe they could do anything wrong, so any complaints are dismissed as "noise" and no amount of escalation moves the needle. Thirdly, if you are a member of the Health Coach team you know how utterly toxic the leadership is. They are clueless when it comes to leadership, but because they are protected by the COO and CEO, nothing will ever happen. They have confronted and yelled at employees on more than one occasion (and this is IN PERSON while others can see/hear), they bulldoze anyone who dares to have an opinion unlike their own, they talk over you to get their point across, they refuse to listen to you if they doesn't think what you're saying lines up with their thoughts, and they shut down any ideas that are not their own. They will (and have) gone straight to the COO to complain until they gets her way. They have literally told people they always get what they want, and they will use their power to do it (it does not help that we have a lot of weak leaders who will cave to demands). Trust me when I say that most people do not enjoy their interactions with them - and this is across all functions - their own team, product, engineering, other clinical departments, legal, hr - etc. You'll find it difficult to find one person who would describe them as pleasant. It is sad that the leadership on one of the biggest teams in the company is without one iota of leadership sensibilities. They are the opposite of "people first" which is one of Virta's core values. It's really very sad to see them wield their power the way they do.

Pros

- Strong mission - Nice teammates for the most part - Big impact on customers lives (when it works)

Cons

- Recent layoffs/firings have really affected team morale, many teammates don’t seem happy to be here anymore based on how teammates were treated, or feel uneasy about the future - Young leadership team seem to be running around in a panic and making poor decisions as a result. Majority of seasoned senior execs have left in last 2-3 years, including experts in the diabetes field. That should tell you a lot about confidence in this company long term. - Ineffective leadership has made for a lot of bad bets and poor quality platform. - If you are in engineering or product, working here is a big challenge, you will always feel like you’re digging yourself out of a hole of poor infrastructure and code quality. Try the app for before joining, you can see it for yourself. The product has only gotten worse with time, not better. - Company is trying hard to be product-led but this is ultimately a tech enabled service, which is challenging to scale. Coaches are the core of the business, and you just need more of them. The product doesn’t offer much to customers. Execs continue to defund product and engineering efforts but expect large positive changes. - Engineering and product roll up to COO. He has very little understanding of how to build products. New CTO seems MIA. Why don’t we hear from him more?
