Inadequate Leadership

Pros

- Strong creative, studio, tech and editorial teams

Cons

- Very, very weak PM and Acct Directors (in terms of leadership capabilities and overall knowledge of work functions) - Director-level leadership does not teach/train their subordinates and frequently acts on emotions rather than factual occurrences - Directors do not have their employees back (in other words, they are weak-willed and pushovers when toughness and grit are required) - Rather than promote and reward quality of work, fiscal responsibility on accounts and solid internal communication, the corporate culture is laden with 'politicking' and showers accolades on those who are well versed in the art of brown-nosing - Disturbingly high turnover - Entirely too many internal meetings (most are pointless) which interferes with daily work output and hinders the ability to leave the office at a reasonable hour on most days -- this really adds up on a weekly basis

Miserable.

Pros

Nice downtown location. Free ice cream that no one really eats.

Cons

VML hires young college graduates who are willing to work 60-90 hours per week in order to prove themselves in their first job, which in turn is the expectation for all employees. If you think you can be the exception via good time management, think again. This highly stressed/low skilled work force translates into bad work for most clients (minus a select few accounts that only reside in Kansas City). Management is horrible. They have their own long list of responsibilities, and at the bottom is interfacing with the people who report to them. They have no time to train, develop, or mentor their team, and treat people like expendable assets. Turnover here is so high that no one takes the time to introduce themselves or build relationships. Either you, or they, will be gone very soon. On the 3rd and 4th floors (accounting, consulting managers, account/assistant account managers, directors, etc), no one smiles nor laughs, hardly ever. When you walk into the building in the mornings, a frequent encounter in the elevator entails an employee doing paced-breathing exercise to brace for the impact of the day. People are so unhappy and deflated here... the culture is miserable.

Pros

Creative Directors work tirelessly to ensure we continue to retain business and win new pitches. Many talented junior PMs, Studio/Dev personnel, and Account leads

Cons

New lead of PM has little to no experience managing and creates an environment of separation, judgement, bad mouthing, brown nosing, and insecurity. Many people with more experience have been put in very bad situations due to it, and HR does nothing about it.
