Pros

Paycheck. Bonuses. Staff. Caring attitude between hourly employees.

Cons

I hope to never have another experience like the one I've had with Waffle House. Long hours don't cut it. If you have a family, prepare to not spend time with them for weeks to months. You will be on the phone constantly, ensuring you have coverage, and doing the work of your District Managers, in hopes it's in preparation for a promotion, that never comes. They will hire from outside the company almost every time, as most companies do. I worked for 4 years and then put in a request for an interview/evaluation for promotion to District Manager. Though I had won awards, and made close to 10K more than other managers due to making my bonuses just about every month, I received 1s and 2s on my evaluation form. However there was no indication I was failing to meet high standards in those areas, as no one ever voiced any complaints, or offered constructive criticism, or ways they expected me to improve. I've watched several marriages fail due to, in part, the incredible lack of "family friendly" Waffle House claims to be, my own teetered on the brink. When I finally had enough I decided to leave, the only thing said, and to my face, was, "How can you do us like that?" There was no indication senior management appreciated the 5 years of my life they had, just that I hadn't done enough for them. Waffle House is the perfect job for someone single, or someone just looking for a paycheck who is willing to work restaurant hours.

they raise their menu prices every 3 months by 10-20¢ like clockwork to adjust for “inflation”. my wage has never once increased past min. waitstaff wage ($2.13/hr in my state).

Pros

I got my start in the food management industry here. I learned so much. If you can run a unit, you can do anything. So if you can be happy at a unit manager level, go ahead and give it try. If you don't like it, leave, but, take what you learn with you, it will help with your career. The fundamentals that they teach you about running a business are priceless.

Cons

You are the manager, the cook, the server, the yardman, the trashman, the substitute staff, the janitor, the repairman, you are every person that you hire and then some. Expect to work long days and nights. The staff are great once you get them to understand teamwork. You will always have the ones that will not be dependable. This is why you will end up working long days and nights. They are usually recognizable early on. Your upper management will determine how far you go. You will be overlooked for promotion given to those less qualified if you are not "in" with the upper management . We are in Florida so don't expect too much. Georgia, the Carolinas, may give you a better shot at making it. I attended the Waffle House Academy with others that were promoted within 6 months to district management and others promoted to Division managers within 18 months. In Florida, it is a good old boy network and they will not allow others that are not like them to move into any upper management positions.
