Pros

There are some very solid departments within Western, I am lucky enough to work for one. - Solid mentorship - Good exposure to new skills - Good community

Cons

- Pay is about 30% less than other Whatcom jobs in my field and about 50% less than seattle jobs. Management would say that benefits make up the difference, but other companies offer similar benefits. - Some departments are very adverse to change - Faculty can sometimes prove challenging to work with - Age demographic is on the older side

The union representation is stellar and the students are vibrant.

Cons

The HR department is horrible, incompetent and unresponsive. I've worked in Higher Education in 3 countries and this was my worst experience ever.

Great students, beautiful campus, progressive community, fantastic union

Cons

There is currently almost no HR department, which is symptomatic of large-scale administrative chaos. Admin is a shell. Faculty and staff have to do their jobs, plus run the university, because administrators generally won’t step up, are incompetent, or quit and are never replaced. There’s a terrible pattern of bullying among faculty (faculty to faculty). Great place to be a student; terrible place to work.
