Pros

My team was wonderful. World class, high energy, succeeded at every project thrown our way. I love the social impact projects. Offices are awesome (but shouldn’t take away from remote work).

Cons

Ran into many non inclusive situations. Even when HR was brought in they indicated that the issues were not led by bias intentions and that the lack of inclusion was simply an illusion. Leadership always preached “ownership” but when you owned a project and executed differently than they would expect, they would let you hear it and put a lot of blame on you. I was out sick for a few days and my manager texted me everyday asking me to pick up the slack and we needed to have a serious conversation about my career when I recovered (I was in the ER). HR and management constantly preaches that feedback is crucial and valued. However, whenever I (or any colleagues) would bring feedback up it would be discredited immediately. If feedback was brought to me, I would have zero chance to respond to it. I was discriminated against multiple times by my manager. I often would do the work/projects my manager would sign up for but then “delegate” away. My manager was new to management in the past year and was really poor at it but given their tenure they were more respected than myself. This company also discriminates anyone who doesn’t get the COVID vaccine. I saw several team members get discriminated for this and their managers would claim all of a sudden their “performance” was deteriorating…when in fact they were a top producer or worker on their team. Pay is extremely low here! Way below market standard. The company is way far behind on remote work. They don’t allow remote work full time for any employees. This shows a lack of ability to keep up with their own competition and employee needs. Several managers were ruthless toward their project teams and I saw several employees get let go and the managers would laugh about it to me or talk so lowly of the employee, thinking I would find it humorous too. One of my team members was told they weren’t being promoted simply because they didn’t “look” like a manager and weren’t the best dressed in Zoom calls…ouch! Overall, this company needs a leadership overhaul and more inclusive leaders…while also needing to improve pay and remote work.

As rare as it is, it's painful to see someone have the experience described here at WillowTree. The thought of anyone laughing if someone has to be let go (which by the way is an extraordinarily rare event) is completely foreign to anything I have witnessed here. There are two critiques made in this post that we stand behind: most of our teams will be coming back into the office on a hybrid basis when the numbers support that (and I would note that is based on internal feedback and team member demand for hybrid as the preferred work environment), and we are urging our team members to be vaccinated if they are able to be. - Tobias

A Big Agency

Pros

Good place to start or wrap up a career. You will learn a lot and probably be relatively happy as long as you aren’t terribly ambitious to change anything too much. The company is having a great year and outside of covid, growth has been strong.

Cons

They talk a big game, but this is not a “big” technology operation and they cannot compete with those players on opportunity nor benefits/rewards. They say they only hire A players and that’s likely true, but in my experience they use that line to convince you to join and then the rewards are not aligned. Benefits seem to be inline with competitors. Salaries for people who have been with the company for a few years seem to be average or lower than what you can get elsewhere. We are coming up on two years since the company has given everyone a real (not cost of living) raise. Most people including the VP team seem to be box checkers and people maintaining the status quo than people who can change anything. They follow the process and defer to c-level for decisions. The VP team doesn’t seem to be getting coaching to one day sit at the c-level or trusted to make decisions having significant impact. I’ve witnessed c-level and other execs ghosting people and never replying when they reach out. The executive team seems to be reactionary. They’ll tell you when you’re doing something wrong, but never praise you for doing something great. They swoop in and don’t even get the facts before telling you that you are wrong. There’s also a lot of “telephone” via Slack with weird politics going on between offices.

Thanks for taking the time to write this review. Sorry you have not been having a great experience in terms of being able to make the changes you'd like to see. Our intent is certainly to empower the VP / Branch Leadership team -- would love to hear examples where we are falling short so we can address -- please send me an email or swing by weekly office hours. I agree it's absolutely critical that we have a strong and empowered VP team. In terms of comp increases, please understand we took the decision to do zero layoffs during COVID, when we lost 25% of our business in Q1 2020. That was a financial hit, but our commitment was to retain and support our team first. Things have improved rapidly in 2021 and we are on path to give (a) bonuses to those (have already paid many out) to those who took temporary salary reductions in 2020 and (b) meaningful raises which have already rolled out for several teams. Pros

Open to recent grads or engineers with not much experience seeking a first dab at software engineering. This seems like the niche of worker it can benefit the most, if you have more experience you can probably skip this consulting firm.

Cons

The company boasts too much about being the best but salaries are not up there. Willow Tree managers work as supervisors rather than agents of change, because for most of the projects the client decides everything, so the administration layer does little to improve things. Toxicity can be an issue here, a lot of seasoned employees feel they have tenure and can be hard to work with. A lot of virtue signaling with little to show for it. The clients are remote but yet they want you to be in the office, this seems counter intuitive. Core values counter the values of the clients that you work with. The company claims to be progressive yet their clients promote hate content. Drama everywhere, there are projects here that have so much drama that lowers the morale, one should just be able to work without having to carry the emotional operational aspect.

Thx for taking the time to write a review. Experiences here can be driven by the project team/client, so we ask team members to please engage with your mentor or leadership team if your project is a bad fit for you. We're regularly moving team members around if they are looking for a different opportunity here. Ultimately, WillowTree is simply an aggregation of the people who make up this team, so our highest ambition is to provide an incredible experience here, at all levels. - Tobias
