Pros

Love the modern office, equipment, technology and perks eg: casual wear, free fruits, coffee, soda, games, pool table...etc.

Cons

As the saying goes, "it's not what you know but who you know". The manager I had was not qualified for the role, given that she had no prior experience as a manager, but I knew she was close with the upper management people. She set unrealistic expectations, hid behind fake smiles in silence (I had asked specifically on my work performance), then ambushed me with HR mediation out of the blue with no prior warning, saying that HR was just there to facilitate. Needless to say, HR sided with her and her reporting manager (whom I invited as a neutral party to hear both sides of the story) didn't seem to care. She is one who "makes a mountain out of a molehole" as the points raised were mostly circled on one particular day's event eg: not responding to her email within 10 mins. I knew of some colleagues who had their managers' support even when they had made major mistakes. It's true what I've seen in reviews that this company hires and fires at will. If your manager likes you, you're safe. If not, you're out. I would have enjoyed working there, but definitely not for an unqualified manager like her.

Thank you for the feedback, genuine honest communication is so important and I am disappointed that you do not feel that you experienced this. Sometimes relationships at work don’t go as they should and my team and I strive to ensure that we help managers and employees work together well and overcome issues together. We are working hard as we scale to promote and give opportunities to people who are passionate, performing and have aspiration to learn and do more - these opportunities include roles for new managers. All managers are taken through our management training called M@X and are supported and coached by both the HR team and their own manager. Managers don't make unilateral decisions on people’s employment. We invest heavily in the recruitment process to find amazing people who can thrive in our culture, and on the rare occasions where things don't work out we call it out as early and have #Human conversations.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts it's so valuable. As Xero is scaling incredibly rapidly we are not always going to get it right. Our culture and values underpin the need for ongoing transparent feedback particularly during this period of rapid growth so that we can hold on to what makes Xero special. We know that providing feedback to peers, managers, lead team and even the MD can be daunting so we have implemented a coaching program for all employees on 'how to' have those conversations at all levels. We understand we can only fix something if we know it's broken. At Xero we want people to #Champion their ideas, #Challenge if they disagree, be #Human as we all make mistakes and take #Ownership if something isn't working so that ultimately we can deliver a #Beautiful product to our customers.

Pros

not too sure what is left there, But It used to be a great and amazing place Following best practices not a long time ago, ppl left really don't speak about the last years, I wish they would, so other industries know where we failed and dont follow our footpath

Cons

I worked at Xero during a time when it was widely known for its #beautiful software and strong human values. However, since 2020, I observed significant changes in the company culture and structure. Over time, the focus shifted towards hiring full stack developers, which resulted in many senior and advanced front-end engineers either leaving or being reassigned to back-end work. During my last few months at Xero, I noticed a decline in morale—many colleagues no longer appeared motivated or inspired. The vibrant culture and emphasis on #human values seemed to diminish, and people began to feel more like cogs in a machine rather than valued team members. Promotions and recognition became less about innovation or creativity, and more about how quickly tasks could be completed, often without room for critical thinking or reflection on the bigger picture. I also noticed some leadership appointments that seemed misaligned with the requirements of technical roles; for example, our team once hired a Head of IT with a background in mechanical engineering but limited experience in software development. While diversity in leadership can be positive, in this case, there was a noticeable skills gap that impacted team dynamics and technical direction. Recently, I learned that the architectural team was disbanded altogether. As any developer knows, software architects play a vital role in guiding the technical vision and maintaining the integrity of complex systems. This decision suggested a shift away from deep technical leadership, which may not serve the company well in the long run. Xero was once a place of great inspiration and collaboration. My hope is that the company finds its way back to prioritizing innovation, employee well-being, and the technical excellence that made it stand out.
