Pros

Used to be a great company to work for with competent management.

Cons

Commercetools CEO has made one poor financial decision after another, decisions that don't make any sense and defy logic. This is proved by the fact that commercetools recently had to layoff a large amount of people because they've lost so many clients and can't get new ones. They've had several really bad quarters recently and and have been overtaken by competitors. The layoffs will most likely continue unless major changes are made at c-level. Only work here if you are desperate and looking for short-term employment.

Layoffs naturally create uncertainty, frustration, and even anger — emotions we fully recognize and don’t dismiss. But it’s also important to lead with facts. Our recent workforce reduction was not driven by client losses. In fact, our customer retention remains strong, and we continue to work with some of the world’s leading enterprises. What has become more difficult — across the entire B2B SaaS industry — is winning new business in a slow and cautious market. This is not unique to commercetools, and the industry-wide nature of these challenges is evident in both competitor layoffs and public earnings reports. We’ve always been open about our ambition. In some years, that ambition has fueled incredible momentum. In others, market conditions have made it harder to grow at the pace we’ve aimed for. That’s a tough reality, but it is also the truth. Lastly, while comparisons are inevitable, it's important to clarify that companies mentioned in this review operate with very different business models, customer types, and organizational structures. commercetools has always focused on the enterprise segment, and drawing one-to-one comparisons with companies that serve entirely different markets and operate on a different scale doesn't reflect the full picture. We remain committed to building a sustainable business and continuing to support our people and our customers through whatever market conditions lie ahead.

Pros

- great people - good networking opportunity - decent pay - good product - fun events and travel - autonomy - flexibility & work/life balance

Cons

Bad time to be with the company given their plans to IPO/be acquired. They are also trying to recover from having a terrible 2024 - sales were terrible and they lost credibility from customers and partners in the ecosystem. A lot of work needs to be done to repair the damage and the next couple years won't be fun for anyone here. - lots of unpredictable change in attempts to rebuild the company (of course change is to expected at a start-up but this is relentless. They don't give us a week to recover/adjust before dropping more bad news. - lack of growth opportunities - layoffs in increments - extremely political environment - no cohesive strategy—each department operates independently with conflicting initiatives - they don't set employees up for success in their roles - very disorganized across the board - leadership is not trustworthy - zero structure - high stress - difficult product and market to sell into

We appreciate your feedback and your recognition of our team, culture, and the strengths of our product. However, we want to correct some misrepresentations in this post. While commercetools, like many companies, faced challenges in 2024, the characterization that we “lost credibility” with customers and partners is inaccurate. Our retention rate reflects the strength of our relationships, and we are actively investing in these partnerships — something that’s evident in our recent appointments within the new customer organization. Change is a constant in any scaling company, and while we recognize that it can be difficult, we aim to manage it with transparency and care. Our restructuring decisions were made thoughtfully, and while no approach will please everyone, we have taken steps to support employees through transitions. We acknowledge that commercetools is not the right environment for everyone, but for those who embrace growth, innovation, and adaptability, there are still great opportunities here. We remain committed to refining our strategy, supporting our teams, and driving commercetools forward.

First and foremost, we’re concerned about this post, given that no one has ever held this title at commercetools — whether in Boston or anywhere else. We’re very open to feedback, but we want to make sure we’re hearing from real current or former employees. That said, we refute the claim that commercetools is “too EU-focused.” Our executive team and recent hires are evenly split between Europe and the U.S., reflecting our commitment to being a truly global company — something we take pride in. The culture described in this review does not align with our values. However, we recognize that friction is natural in times of change, and we continue to work toward fostering a collaborative, respectful environment. Favoritism and backstabbing are not tolerated at commercetools, and we strongly encourage anyone experiencing such behavior to report it through the appropriate channels.
