Toxic Environment

Pros

Junior and mid level employees are great and hardworking, built life long connections with these people and former colleagues.

Cons

In the last 18 months, the company has changed significantly, and not for the better. Benefits that were core to the company have been cut (like work from abroad) and lay offs are happening frequently, the latest being just days before Christmas. The company claims that it's in a sound financial position and has had its best year yet but at what expense? Why are you laying people off and cutting benefits if the business is doing well? The new CEO is also the Chair of the Board so there is no pushback to his ideas or whims. The rest of leadership is afraid of him. The company has lost itself and is no longer a place where you would want to work. It's incredibly toxic with lots of smoke and mirrors, and little positive direction.

We’re genuinely glad to hear that the relationships you built with colleagues were meaningful — the strength, dedication, and care of our people is something we deeply value. At the same time, we recognize that the last 18 months have been difficult and unsettling for many, and that change — even when made deliberately — can feel personal and painful, especially for those who have spent years helping build the company. It’s important to acknowledge that impact. Some of the decisions referenced here were driven by a need to align the company more closely with where our customers, market, and long-term strategy are headed. These choices were not reflections of individual performance, nor were they made lightly. We’ve worked to provide transparency where possible and to treat people with care and respect throughout these transitions, even when the outcomes were hard. We also want to be clear that leadership decisions are shaped through active discussion, challenge, and accountability at both the executive and board levels. While not every decision will be agreed with by everyone, they are made with the long-term health of the company and its people in mind. We understand that not everyone will feel aligned with where the company is today, and we respect that perspective. We remain committed to building a focused, grounded organization where teams know the direction we’re heading, understand why decisions are made, and can do meaningful work alongside thoughtful, capable colleagues. We appreciate you sharing your point of view and wish you the very best in what comes next.

Awful reviews don’t happen when people are treated well

Pros

With benefits steadily decreasing, the only pros are some of the people still left after 3 separate rounds of layoffs and an voluntary severance package

Cons

3 rounds of layoffs in 2025. Last one was 1 week before Christmas. Guessing there will be more to come as board looks to exit. Company has over-indexed in profits > people. Look at all of the recent low ratings. This doesn’t happen when companies treat people well or companies are thriving.

Thank you for taking the time to share your perspective. We hear the frustration in this review, and it’s clear the last year has been a difficult experience for some. We do want to clarify a few points for accuracy. commercetools has not had three layoffs in 2025. There have been three layoffs in the company’s history total. Each was a hard decision made with the long-term direction of the business in mind, not a reflection of individual performance or dedication. We know that context doesn’t remove the impact, but it does matter. We also recognize that change, especially with a new CEO and a different cultural direction, won’t work for everyone. As the company evolves, expectations around focus, accountability, and how we work together have shifted. That can be energizing for some and frustrating for others, and both reactions are valid. Regarding the All Hands format, emoji reactions were removed so speakers could focus on presenting without reacting in real time. Feedback channels were not removed. Questions and discussion were intentionally shifted to in-person settings, as shared during the same meeting, and broader employee feedback continues to be collected through established avenues outside of the All Hands AMA. We appreciate you sharing how this period has felt. While we may not agree on every conclusion, we take the sentiment seriously and continue to reflect on how we communicate, listen, and lead through moments of change.

Pros

The first line managers and individual contributors were some of the best people I’ve worked with, but they live in fear of layoffs every day.

Cons

The overall company culture is the worst I’ve ever experienced and I believe that is due to unclear and unempathetic leadership. It is extremely toxic and fear-based - I hope my colleagues can get out of there as soon as possible. There was no clear company strategy and it felt like the CEO was taking things one day at a time and didn’t care about his employees at all. There’s been several rounds of layoffs, including one 7 days before Christmas. The CEO approval rate speaks for itself. In the 2025 yearly review cycle, the CEO decided that almost no one was allowed to receive an “outstanding” rating because the company did not meet its revenue targets - something my more veteran colleagues had never experienced at commercetools. In order to get a promotion there, you needed two outstanding reviews in a row. So needless to say, they won’t be promoting people. A couple things to note: first, our yearly review cycles are based on the individual goals we set for ourselves - many of us overperformed on our goals and rightfully deserved an “outstanding” — and received one from our managers — but were bumped down to “strong”. Second, the CEO reinstated Presidents Club for the sales team members who met their individual goals, which is a luxury, all-inclusive vacation for them and their spouses. So, the AEs that met their individual goals are being rewarded with a vacation, but non-sales employees who also met their goals were penalized with unfairly low ratings because the the company as a whole didn’t sell enough. So those of us who worked very hard all year in the hopes of getting a small promotion did not get one, while sales gets a vacation despite underperforming as a team.
