Join us in cell-ebrating our team on the release of the CZ #CellxGene preprint! Over the past few years, community efforts and single-cell technology advancements have led to a wealth of data on the inner-workings of our cells. We built CellxGene Discover to help scientists make the most of this data and unlock new discoveries about our cells. It is now the largest openly available resource of interoperable data and provides access to individual studies but also enables scientists to ask questions of the entire data corpus.
We’re excited to announce that we’re launching a new Biohub in New York to harness immune cells to better detect, prevent and treat disease. Fostering collaboration between Columbia University, Rockefeller University and Yale University and led by Andrea Califano, CZ Biohub NY will use the latest single-cell tools, AI and other experimental methods to decode the language of immune cells so we can heed warnings more precisely. The CZ Biohub NY will also engineer these cells to navigate to specific organs and tissues to examine their health and take therapeutic actions. We’re excited to see this work transform how we treat hard-to-detect diseases like ovarian and pancreatic cancers, and neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.
“Year Up played a pivotal role in bridging the opportunity gap between my career and me, a Mexican-born female from East San Jose, California.” CZIer Blanca Hernandez shares the importance of her experience at CZI grantee Year Up—a free job training and internship program and one of the organizations our Latinx employee resource group is highlighting for #LatinxHeritageMonth. Blanca is part of our movement & capacity building team where she’s working to make a difference by building partnerships and supporting grantees by providing access to resources like strategic planning and leadership training. “Year Up was a life-changing program for me and many students who chose a non-traditional college path. The program equipped me with vital skills needed to excel in tech, emphasizing technical and interpersonal abilities. I take great pride in being a product of Year Up, as it helped me unlock my potential and embrace growth beyond my comfort zone.”

AI has the potential to accelerate breakthroughs in understanding health and disease. That’s why we’re building one of the world’s largest computing clusters dedicated to non-profit life science research and using it to create digital models of cells in healthy and diseased states. Researchers worldwide will be able to use this AI tool to unlock the mysteries of our cells and how they function in systems—bringing them a step closer to curing, preventing or managing all diseases. Learn how our new computing cluster for non-profit life science research will aid scientists in simulating the behavior of every cell type in health and disease.

“After I joined the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative in 2018, I set out to identify how the initiative—with its audacious mission to cure, prevent or manage all disease by the end of the century; its capacities in grantmaking, science, and technology; and its commitment to community-driven solutions—could support and leverage the power of patients to accelerate biomedical research and innovation in rare diseases.” CZIer Tania Simoncelli worked in science policy for 20 years before joining CZI. Leveraging her past professional and personal experiences, Tania launched the #RareAsOne Project, which unites patient-led rare disease communities as they accelerate research to identify new treatments and cures for their diseases. “Over the past three and a half years of engaging with our Rare As One grantees, we’ve gotten glimpses of just how patient groups, given the opportunity to lead, can change the way medical knowledge is produced and applied. While we’re still in early days, it’s possible to imagine a future ecosystem built around patients and their experiences and directed in a more laser-like way toward treatments and cures.”
