“Coaching these kids gives me so much more joy than I ever expected. It’s a lot of time and effort but the reward is seeing them so excited when they succeed, seeing them learn things when they fail, seeing them support their teammates and seeing the teams and their parents come together as a family.” CZI finance business partner Frank Wasilewski spent 148 hours volunteering with the American Youth Soccer Association last year. He is one of 80 CZIers giving back to their community through our volunteer time off program. “What started out as just what I thought was my parental duty has evolved into so much more. I am a better person because of my experience coaching. The girls have taught me so much about myself and how I should react in so many situations. I hope they have learned even a fraction of all that I have learned from them.”
We’re excited that our co-founder Priscilla Chan is part of this year’s A100 list, which honors the 100 Asians and Pacific Islanders who had the most impact on culture and society over the past year. Thanks Priscilla for all you do to help build a better future for everyone!
Last month, we celebrated the mosaic of cultures, backgrounds and traditions represented by our Saffron employee resource group! April was Saffron's celebration month as it reflects a season of joy and gathering including Ramadan, Easter, Passover, the end of Persian new year and Arab Heritage Month. CZIers enjoyed an afternoon full of tea and traditional sweets while listening to a live oud musical performance. Check out some photos from the event!
“Committing to a longer term volunteering opportunity can be tough but rewarding.” CZI software engineer Roger Lam spent over 130 hours volunteering last year. He is one of 80 CZIers who participated in our program where teammates can give back to their community through volunteer time off. “If they are putting in the work, I can put in the work. It's about paying it forward and paying it back.” #TeamCZI #VolunteerMonth #VolunteerAppreciationMonth #volunteering
We're launching a new Biohub in Chicago to build technology to transform what we know about human biology. Fostering partnership between the University of Chicago, Northwestern University and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, the CZ Biohub Chicago will develop miniaturized sensors to understand how our cells function and interact in living tissue in real time. Researchers will apply this technology to directly measure inflammation in human tissue, which will help us understand the role inflammation plays in disease and ultimately develop new treatments. Our success with the first Biohub in San Francisco has taught us the value of collaboration between research institutions to solve complex scientific problems. With the CZ Biohub Network and the launch of the CZ Biohub Chicago, we aim to scale this unique research model and bring us closer to curing, preventing or managing all diseases. Hear from our co-founders Priscilla and Mark about the impact of #CZBiohubSF and #CZBiohubCHI on our quest to eradicate all diseases.
Past CZIers have played a vital role in the creation and evolution of who we are today. We created the CZI Alumni Network to provide a place for current employees and alumni to learn from each other, share resources, strengthen existing relationships and make new connections. Check out all the smiling faces from our first event!
Check out our brand new CZI office in downtown Redwood City, California. Our amazing team designed this space to meet the needs of today's hybrid work environment, fostering flexibility, collaboration and connection for our CZI employees. We can't wait to see the amazing work that comes out of this new space!
Our employee resource group focused on empowering the Black community at CZI works to build connections, leadership and advance knowledge for Black identifying employees. This year for Black History Month, they selected Family Reunion as our theme to celebrate the cumulative resilience and accomplishments of Black people across the diaspora while coming together as one family. As part of the celebration, members submitted reflections and recipes: “Togetherness and a shared way to preserve Black culture and triumph.” CZIer Erin Pierce shares what the Family Reunion means to her and her family’s Quick Biscuits recipe. “Pure love and joy!” That’s what Family Reunion means to CZIer Drew Brown and his Cantaloupe Martini recipe reminds him of family gatherings. It’s “a twist on a drink that we enjoy every holiday with each other. It brings up so many positive memories.” “Reconnecting and continuing to build on relations you are not able to on a frequent basis.” CZIer Winnie Kerubo shares what Family Reunion means to her and her family’s Mandazi recipe.
Happy Lunar New Year and Year of the Rabbit! We’re wishing everyone a prosperous and joyful year. Check out how CZIers celebrated with family, friends and each other, including a hybrid dim sum and origami-rabbit-making social. 🐰
“I love building technology with open source scientific communities as you get to work directly with people who are knowledgeable and passionate about both software and science.” Scientific imaging will play a critical role in our understanding of health and disease by driving diagnostic tools, and informing better, more effective treatments. Nicholas Sofroniew came to CZI with a background in neuroscience and microscopy. Now he is helping to lead CZI’s contribution to the community-run, open source napari project. Learn how Nicholas and our community of builders are opening access to a suite of new scientific imaging tools and robust frameworks to quantify, analyze and share imaging data to advance scientific discovery.
