Children's nursing programs address staff shortages
On Jan. 14, Children's hosted a family simulation day to provide an opportunity for team members to show their families and friends what daily life looks like for a health care worker at Children's. The day was filled with interactive stations and demonstrations, craft projects and treats!
Children's has partnered with Carrot Fertility to bring their team members comprehensive, inclusive fertility health care and family-forming benefits. Through Carrot, employees have access to exclusive resources designed to make fertility care more accessible and affordable to everyone — regardless of age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or location.
Plans are underway for a new Children’s ambulatory facility at 204th and Harrison Streets in Omaha. Our goals are to provide ease of access and convenient ambulatory care for the patients and families we serve. This new, two-story 60,000-square-foot facility will house several specialty clinics, a Children’s Physicians primary care office and outpatient rehabilitation spaces, as well as Radiology and Laboratory services. The rehabilitation space will offer access to an outdoor area for enhanced rehab services—a first for Children’s. Construction is set to begin soon, weather permitting, on the 10 acres of land. “This development will allow Children’s to meet the needs of patients and improve access to health care for those who live in the vicinity or who are coming from western Nebraska, while also positioning Children’s for long-term growth,” says Kathy English, executive vice president, chief operating officer and chief nursing officer. The new facility is anticipated to open in spring 2024. The site offers ample space for future building phases.
Creativity has been on full display at Children's this past week with dynamic (and incredibly impressive) LEGO builds from team members, community organizations and one of our very own patients. "What did you want to be when you grew up" was the theme that inspired more than 10 participants to submit builds, which are on display for patient families and team members to view until Tuesday, Dec. 6, in Children's atrium. Thank you to the participants for sharing your time, talents and big dreams with us. We are blown away by your creativity and your enthusiasm for bringing joy to our patients and their families!
Children's new Interfaith Chapel offers a welcoming place to find spiritual shelter for people of all religions, spiritual and philosophical beliefs. Located in the newly renovated lobby of the Hubbard Center, the chapel features a common area for those who prefer to gather, while also including three private rooms for individual prayer or reflection. The Interfaith Chapel is open 24-hours a day and open to patients, families, caregivers and Children's team members.
A planned behavioral health facility for children has expanded in both scope and cost - going from $50 million to $89 million - and shifted locations to the campus of Children's Hospital & Medical Center in central Omaha. The center will be operated by Children's and services will include 38 inpatient hospital beds, a pediatric mental health urgent care center, a first-in-the-region behavioral health emergency assessment center, an expanded partial hospitalization program and a pediatric primary care clinic with outpatient mental health services. The plans for the new facility emerged after Omaha's Mental Health Innovation Foundation convened a steering committee in summer 2021 that included officials from Immanuel, Boys Town, Children's, Creighton University and other organizations, to address growing mental health challenges for children and teens.
This week we're featuring the Cardiac Cath Lab team! This small, specialized team of nurses and radiologic technicians takes personalized care to a new level. With over 550 procedures per year, with a good portion of the children served needing more than one procedure, the team is able to build relationships with the patients and families they serve. “We write notes to the kids and try to personalize it with things that we learned are important to them. We might say that we hope baseball season goes well or reference whatever we know about them," says Abby Kirsch, manager of the Cath Lab. At first, team members were worried this was one more thing for their already stretched team to accomplish. The worry soon dissolved when they realized the impact the notes were making. One family provided a comment: “The letter the Cath Lab sent us made me tear up with joy. It's not something people do anymore, and it just makes me grateful for great people.” Thank you to our amazing Cath Lab team for your dedication to providing exceptional experiences to our patients, families and team!
