Pros

There are amazing, great, wonderful people that work at Academy. Volunteer time off and ample service opportunities are a plus. Food trucks twice a week, and unlimited soda at the home office.

Cons

Layoffs - they will continue to tell you that they are okay and that you are safe, up until you are not. I trusted management to let me know when to brush up my resume. They did not. Lack of Management support - Don't expect to be visited by any C or V level execs, especially if you are in the home office. In my few years at the home office, not once did any of them stop to even as much say hi to our team. Deteriorating benefits in times of famine - They will redact their match to your 401k and HSA accounts. At the end of adventure with Academy, it was very apparent that if you are not a producing loan officer, you are replaceable. Your tenure, skills, and position are just medals you pin on your chest. Academy loves to dangle the carrot on the stick. The promotions, advancements, changes - all of it - never seemed to come, and if they did, they were retracted shortly after.

Pros

This company offers autonomy and does not micromanage - pays fairly well to start - has a nice corporate office that includes a gym. They have food trucks and on site services BUT

Cons

This company cares more about its image than it does about its actual employees. They offer volunteer opportunities, but they use all of them as marketing to show everyone what a "good" company they are. They also are more interested in paying upper/middle management the big bucks than they are about keeping the people who actually make them money. During times of crisis, their solution isn't to reduce pay of upper management who do nothing - they lay dozens of ops people off, who have been loyal to the company. The company spent thousands on a leadership conference, where branch managers and loan officers were flown in from all over the country to wine and dine them, all while laying off tons of hard working employees.

Pros

*There are some great people that work here. *There is some potential to develop and learn.

Cons

Annual layoffs a few weeks prior to Christmas, every year... Hundreds of employees.... Zero transparency or loyalty to their loyal employees. Whoever is in charge of staffing, terminating, and managing the management and executive level team over the last several months needs some serious oversight or to be replaced. As another reviewer mentioned, the 'good ole boys club' is alive and well within this dynamic. These long time employees (even those not in management positions) are making hiring and termination decisions, including but not limited to their friends being hired from outside despite not being qualified for the respective position. They always get their 'guy' hired. This is especially evident in the HR, IT, and Executive level teams, but is apparent all the way to the branches. The frequency of leadership changes and layoffs equate to an environment of chaos with employees never feeling safe in their jobs and receiving little to no clear communication from the top down. Employees not in sales positions are no longer eligible for bonuses of any kind, this is coupled with below market salaries and a mediocre benefits package. Standing desks, 'free' soda, and ping pong do not pay your employees bills.
