Pros

Great trainer! Very patient, thorough and an all around sweet human being :)

Cons

The supervisor had a very “you’re beneath me” attitude. At one point stated, after I had asked a very specific question for clarity and guidance, “I don’t know, that’s why they hired you as an agent and not me” and “no that’s not right, what did you even learn in training?” At one point she had to ask her team something she couldn’t answer when it came to a simple documentation question. I’ve been in the work field many years but this was the first time I have ever had someone blatantly talk down to me so unprofessionally. Treating people with respect should always be top priority and clearly it wasn’t with this particular supervisor.

Pros

Happy with my Salary. Work life balance is great. Permanent Remote Work. Generally friendly atmosphere.

Cons

Terrible agile implementation. It's basically "big up-front design" waterfall methodology with a task board (that is misused as a time tracking tool, yay!). Meeting happy environment that ties up technical folks for more than 50% of the day. Most of the meetings are mass-mailed to folks that dont really need to be there, or "corporate rah-rah" type meetings. As someone else mentioned, there is no real sense of teamwork here. There is a very strong "Get my stuff done and throw it over the wall" mentality here that is pervasive throughout the technical organization. Be prepared to spend a lot of time twiddling your thumbs and waiting. This happens on a inter and intra team level. You can see this manifest itself with the behavior of coworkers. Many people will be AWOL for hours or even days at a time before you get some sort of response to a message. My current record is 9 days before getting a response to a chat message. The corporate culture is also very averse to any sort of decision making. Business folks generally do not know what on earth they want, and wantonly defer decision making to technical team members. Technical people are generally afraid to make these types of decisions and get caught in "analysis paralysis" mode. There is an economy here of creating value around the Illusion of work, rather than actually generating things of value. For example, there is a huge emphasis on scheduling meetings, creating flow diagrams and documentation (most of which nobody will ever read) in lieu of creating actual working software. None of this activity has any intrinsic value, but generally speaking it's something to do within a "hurry up and wait" type of environment. The architecture of most systems is completely backwards. Most of the websites are constructed out of a smattering of disparate components controlled by multiple teams. On the surface, this is a good thing. However, the components are generally not well isolated from one another, and require the teams that integrate said components to have deep knowledge of how the components work in order to use them. In other words, most of the time you have to know the intricacies of how the engine works before you are able to drive the car. Lastly, folks here generally do *not* like being questioned or challenged. Candor is unappreciated. If you speak up about any of the above - you will likely be labeled as a "squeaky wheel" and have difficulty getting raises / promotions etc. Quietly accepting mediocrity will get you places, however.

I understand that you're frustrated with how some things work in ASHTech. It sounds like there are certain key issues causing you to be concerned. I admit that I also sometimes feel that change can be frustratingly slow. But you’ve been with our team for a while, so I’m encouraged that some things are working for you here. Since you seem to care deeply about these issues, I would like to invite you to be a positive force for change by working with your supervisor to suggest some key actions you’d like to see change, and then modeling the behaviors you describe here and that you would like to see in others. If you feel your direct leadership isn’t receptive, please reach out directly to me. Together, we will make a difference. Thanks for voicing your concerns. Jerome Bonhomme, CTO.

Pros

Good benefits and nice San Diego location. Good if you are looking for experience early in your career.

Cons

Non-competitive pay, little opportunity for advancement, out of touch management. Don't trust the "Best Places To Work" title. It's done through an optional survey that most employees ignore. Many of the directors and senior managers were either brought in by former co-workers or started early in the company and were promoted because of loyalty but are unqualified and will never leave.. They would not pay for software developer training. High turnover of good employees. Also, managers are offered stock options and promotions while developers are offered free snacks and foosball. There is a clear culture of developers treated as kids, not as peers. Disregard the boilerplate responses to each review from Human Resources. The company focuses too much on marketing, such as the "Best Places to Work" title, and trying to look good online rather than addressing real issues. There are better companies out there.

Hello, Thank you for your review of your experience at American Specialty Health and your 10+ years of service. We’re pleased that you appreciated ASH’s comprehensive benefits package that includes paid time off, 11 paid holidays, a 401k match, and a wellness program (to name a few). Our culture focuses on employee growth through a robust tuition reimbursement program, leadership mentoring, and training courses through ASH University. In addition, our Tech team members are eligible for external job-related training opportunities, internal trainings with nationally recognized experts like Barry O’Reilly (author of Unlearn and Lean Enterprise), and stock options for certain levels, including Sr. Engineers. Our Tech teams have access to free onsite gyms, games, and complimentary snacks. We are proud of our Tech Engineers, many of whom are long-time contributors and have advanced quickly with multiple promotions over the years. We are also proud to share that our Tech team turnover rate is lower than industry standards. We are sorry to hear that you didn’t feel listened to during your time at ASH. Our suggestions workgroup, ethics and integrity hotline, ASHTech town halls, 360 feedback surveys, and dedicated Human Resource teams at all locations reinforce the culture of an open door policy. In fact, our recent Employee Engagement Survey showed a 70% response rate which is well above the average survey response. If you have any additional feedback you would like to share we would welcome your email to hr@ashn.com. Thank you again for your service and review.
